B20F mixture adjustment 1800 1973

I am currently having a lean mixture problem(since I cleaned my overdue k&n filter), car runs hot and the plug electrodes are white. I have checked for vacuhum leaks, all is good. I would like to adjust the mixture(co content) but all the books I have say go to the dealer, no longer an option as the car is older than most if not all of the mechanics at the local volvo dealer. All this to ask do I turn clockwise or counterclockwise the screw on the ecu to richen the mixture? Thanks all for your experiance.

    If the mixture is lean across the whole range, then you have a weak fuel pump, plugged filter, or a fuel pressure regulator that is out of whack. Set fuel pressure at 31 psi and see what happens.

    The mixture adjustment screw on the ECU ONLY changes the mixture at idle.
    You need to mess with the apparent resistance of the engine temp sensor to
    change the mixture under power. You could put a 2500 ohm pot in series with
    it and gradually increase the resistance until the ECU thinks it is cold and
    richens the mixture appropriately.

    Are you aware that K&N filters trap very little of the grit going into your engine? There are some good articles on the web about racers who have run K&N filters and performed engine leak down rates (indicating piston ring wear) before and after races using K&N versus paper air filters. The K&Ns are just marginally better than running no air filters.

    Overly lean mixture or hot combustion temperatures may be caused by not enough fuel pressure, clogged passages in the throttle body (if you have one - maybe yours is mechanical?), clogged fuel filter, weak pump, timing out of adjustment, incorrect spark plugs (too hot), bad thermostat or water pump causing high coolant temps, etc. Make sure to fix the simplest (cheapest) things first,

      With all due respect, I gotta think your comments about K&N Filters are some sort of Internet myth. K&N have been around for at least 20 years. There are K&N filters on millions of vehicles (including my precious 1800 and both of my motorcycles). I can't believe that if their products were "only marginally better than no filters" that they'd not have been run out of business by now. Remember what happened to Quaker State when it put a load of bad oil into the market. They still haven't recovered.

        I'm with you.
        I was very skeptical of the K&N claims so I made very close inspections of the airbox on the clean side of the filter and have never found the slightest trace of grit.
        I'm a believer.

      the screw goes clockwise to richen. make certain that the throttle plate screw is not being used as an idle adjustment. the idle screw is under the opening in the intake and has a large locknut on it. make cartain that you do not have any broken ground wires. i believe that they were near the battery or on the intake. make certain that water temp sensor for the fuel injection is connected
      and good,and also air temp sensor is good and connected

        All good posts but nobody mentioned that a faulty temp sensor for coolent or for air can cause a d-jet to run very lean or rich. Check the resistance levels on these two sensors at a known temperature and compare to specs befor doing anything expensive. There is an adjustment in the map sensor that will change the mix over the whole range but it is not for the shade tree machanic. Thats why they put it behind a big plug and then sealed it up in resin. The big plug also has a purpose in the adjustment so don't play with it unless you know your stuff.
