Oil from exhaust 200 1985

I noticed that after a weekend trip with plenty of hard accelerating at highway speed I had oil spray covering the rear of my station wagon that has 175,000 miles on it.

Someone also told me that they noticed white smoke from the tail pipe when I was accelerating hard.

Any ideas?

Hi, i'm guessing the smoke is oil dripping/spraying onto your exhaust... not the best thing to have.
as far as the oil leaking, i'm guessing it's a gasket getting ready to go, a possable solution would be the next time you change the oil ( i do mine every 2500 religiously), dump some oil leak sealent in first, i have had a few leaks over the last year, and it seemed to plug them up pritty well. but if that still does'nt do the trick, you may want to ( clean the engine first), find the leak, and replace that gasket.
    good luck!

It's possible that the white smoke is just carbon being blown out at high rmp. Still need to check for water in the oil.
The oil all over the back? Could be your PCV is getting dirty and cannot work when you build up a lot of pressure. Did you consume a lot of oil? Like a quart? Could also be dirty diff oil, check the level. The heat and dry air of New Mexico does wonders for all of the seals and hoses. Lift the car and take a look under neath.

White smoke indicates a head-gasket leak- check your dipstick for the tell-tale "chocolate milkshake" deposits.

On the other hand, maybe the smoke wasn't coming OUT of the tailpipe, maybe it was just burning off the outside...? I'd put it up on ramps and check your tranny seals too.

Does the oil smell nasty, almost like tar? If so, check the rear
    axle for leaks.

If you have an oil leak under the car, and go at a high rate of speed (freeway driving), the oil will go to the back of your car and spray up on the back hatch. Look under your car to see if you can see any oil and also check the plug at the back of your valve cover to possible leaks. Just run your hand back there.
