Steering problem fixed - strut boot question 200 1987

I just greased the steering column u-joints. You guys were 100% right. It steers smoothly now. I did notice the pass. side strut boot is shredded/rotted. I've got an extra set from the last strut replacement on my other 245. My question is can I just jack up the front to "unload" the spring and unbolt the top nut. Slide down the strut and slip on a new boot? I really do not want to deal with renting a spring compressor. I'll just rip out the old boot (it's already half torn anyway). The new boot could just be stuck in between the spring coils and tucked over the strut.
Am I crazy to want to do this. Is this safe to do? Should I just leave it alone and have everything replaced in a few years when it need struts?
Ben
