'86 740 climate control failure.....HELP! 700

hello,

my girlfriend's 740 has a problem. the climate-control system is stuck on defrost. adjusting the control lever to the various other settings has no effect. i own two 1800's and consider myself to be a pretty good DIYer (hope i dont break my arm patting myself on the back), so i decided to dig into the dash in an attempt to fix it. to my horror, i discovered that the lever actuates a dial (or something) that uses vaccume(?) hoses to opperate the climate control vents. obviously, it's winter, and it's cold; and the defrost setting does a poor job of heating the car (cold air comes out of the dash vents), so it needs to be dealt with. my girlfriend and i are both poor students, and we're hoping that we wont have to take the car to a volvo repairman. is there anything i can do to repair this system?

any advice or help will be much appreciated,

ryan

    Ryan- this may be simple.
You might have just lost the vacuum feed to the thing. I *think* the default mode of it with no supply, is to turn on defrost.
Look for a small vacuum hose coming from the intake manifold to the firewall. That's your source. It may be broken off, or the vacuum hoses may be split. I'd look for this more basic trouble before diving into the climate control unit.
I recently resurrected a car (88 745) that had begun to be parted out- the climate control was cut out of the thing and every hose and cable cut. What a chore getting it all right again. Requires something like the patience of a saint to get apart the molded vacuum hose connectors. Not impossible but certainly not fun. Look for the simpler fix first.
    Good luck!

check under the hood and see if the vacuum supply for the system came off. no vacuum means defrost all the time. good luck, chuck.
