anyone know how to loosen up that pesky hood release? 200 1990

My 1990 240 wagon has gotten to the point where the hood release is so sluggish the hood barely opens. Then once you get it to open, it dosnt want to securely lock down when it is closed.

I make it a point to keep the latch lubed, but I'm thinking that the cable is gummed up.

Ideally, I would like to shoot a lube all the way from one end of the cable to the other.

Have any of you successfully loosened up your hood latching mechanism? If so, please advise on your method.

Thank you.

I have the same problem with my hood release cable. It is a PITA to open the hood and then you have to shove the pull knob back in place in order for the hood to close again. LUCID recommended that you remove the entire cable from the car, hang it upside down, and lube it by dripping drops of oil from the top of the cable all the way to the bottom for a couple of hours (I think maybe minutes). I will try this method soon because I think the latch itself is okay (lube it regularly) but the cable and cable tube must be gummed up, dirty, or rusted. Good Luck!

      Hi Julio,

I didn't take the cable all the way out. Just freed the first 3 feet or so (back to the strut tower. Then I tied the end up to allow the oil to run down the wire.

I don't think penetrating oils can get through the outer sheath. But it would be worth a try before going at it my way.

Thanks for clearing that up. Sometime me memory, she do work no good. I shall be trying your method on Tuesday when I have some time off. Currently I'm tied up with my father in-laws crashed 92 Corvette. The insurance company totaled it and I'm thinking of picking it up and either fixing it to have my own Corvette or turning it to my V8 Volvo Conversion I always wanted to do. Take Care!

One way to find out is try. I mean I don't see why some spray lube wouldn't free things up unless the wire is bent. Or maybe try some graphite.
It works for clutch and throttle cables so why not a hood release cable?

It is more than likely to be resistance in the cable under the sheath. There is a great tool used by bikers, I used to have one, loaned it out and haven't seen it for a while. What it does is wrap round one end of the cable where it enters the sheath and pumps oil through the entire cable under the sheath. You don't have to rely on gravity, and can do it with the cable in place. I can't remember what it is called tho. It's most useful here in the UK when nursing an old British motorbike thats seen too many salted roads. I reckon it would also work on old Volvos ; )
