Heater/Defroster stuff... 200

So the time has come... the dreaded heater/defrost fan replacement.

Does anyone have any strong preference for one supplier over another? I'm looking for folks who have experience with any source... after-market or OEM.

It seems that I remember reading about a place (in Canada maybe?) that makes a ball-bearing repalcement for the fan. I'm probably dreaming (or worse, I did have some pretty graphic pizza dreams last night...), but if it does exist, that might be an good replacement.

Also, while I'm deep into the bowels of the dash, I'm going to replace the heater control valve, too (mine has gone into the digital mode), so same question... any experience with these? My car is an '82; I'd like to hear from someone who has done the conversion to the newer style heater control... is it worth the effort, etc.

As always, thanks in advance.

Heater blower motor with ball bearings........ 200

    Les -

You are right, there is/was a guy up in Canada that offers that mod. However, he wanted (last itme I looked it up) close to $170 USD for the thing.

Somewhere in my pile of printed posts (three rear's worth) is that info. Lemme know I you want to contact him, and I'll see if I can locate his number.

It might also be in "Rolling" magazine advertizement.

    Regards,

    Bob

Well... yeah, I'm interested in seeing what he has to say. Who knows, he may have a couple sitting around, causing his wife to insist that he offer them at a bargain basement price. Or something like that. You never know..!

On the other hand, if it looks like it's going to be a major hassle to find the info, don't bother.

      And thanks.

First shot at looking failed. No time for more looking just now. I'll do some more later.

If you have a blower motor out, maybe from the last time around, you might be able to do what that other fellow does. Replace the bushings with ball bearings. You're near/in a city that ought to have one or two good bearing supply houses. Here in Houston there are several.

        Good Luck,

        Bob

          Bob -

Well, that's a pretty good suggestion. Although I don't have a blower motor in hand, I bet I could find one somewhere if I looked enough.

By the way, I've moved - now in Wichita, KS, working for Boeing on the 767 Tanker program. The 767 is a great airplane, and I really enjoy working on it, but I must say with everything that's been going on with Boeing, it's a little weird to be here.

And the latest bit of news is that Boeing is considering selling off the Wichita facility! The corporate line is "Boeing doesn't want to be a supplier to itself". Since Boeing is mostly interested in final aircraft assembly, I guess that position makes sense.

We'll see how it all works out... the Good Lord has a way of helping me land on my feet (usually in spite of myself..!).

          Les

I have no complaints with the Siemens motor which is readily available. It is a little noisy at the two higher speeds but it does move a lot of air. The two lower speeds serve quite well for most conditions.

If you can get one, buy the original style control valve. I have not tried the plastic replacement but some people here have reported not being able to shut them off completely. That may be a matter of poor adjustment. But since they are made, I believe, by Scan Tech their quality is in doubt. I must admit I am biased against ST products. Whatever you end up with my suggestion would be, after installation, to move the lever on the valve to the fully closed position. It will sort of snap shut. You can feel it, at least on the original type. Then move the control lever on the dash to where it is almost all the way to the left. Then attach the cable to the lever on the valve. You should then be able to completely shut off the flow into the core.

The control valve is pretty easy to replace with the dash on if you want to put off that little chore for a while. Are you sure it's bad?

Well... it's gone into that mode where it's either "all hot" or "all cold"; no adjustment in between. So I assume it's bad.

I used the kit from RPR about 9 years back, still works well. Comes with resistor and instructions.
