In and Out movement of steering wheel 200 1993

Whoops! Whenever I pull back toward my chest on the steering wheel, with my hands on the 9 and 3 o'clock position , I feel a loose clunking noise as if the nut holding the steering wheel to the steering column is loose. BUT the SRS airbag is there. I don't feel comfortable in removing the hornpad and looking. I'm afraid the bag will deploy.
Could the problem be the steering u-joints? or is this a normal "slop" in the steering?
GIA,
el Raidman

El Raidman,

You got it right... it is probably the steering universals. I had a similar problem and replacing the lower universal solved the problem (the upper one, by the way, was in near excellent condition).

The SRS can be unbolted from the steering wheel -just disconnect the battery.

I say this because the replacement of the lower universal resulted in a broken clock spring behind the wheel.

Nos Vemos, Jon
