AC drive belt loosening??? 200 1987

I was doing a little scouting under the hood for timing belt replacement. I was able to loosen all the drive belts except the AC. There seemed to be two bolts to loosen to allow the compressor to pivot and thusly loosen the belt. The one bole, with the adjuster screw, was easy enough, BUT the second bolt seemed really tricky to get to. It's located under the PS unit, and I couldn't find enough room to get at it. Any tips from you timing belt masters out there?

thank you thank you

    I cheat.

I pry the AC belt over the lip of the engine front pulley and then turn the crankshaft using a socket 'n ratchet to completely remove the belt. Not proper, but effective -- and it or the belts have never failed me.

I reinstall essentially the same way.

    thanks folks-

I tried monkeying with a universal on an extension but aparantly didn't have the patience to get it right. I was actually hoping for a "move this thing over there and it's a piece of cake" answer, but so it goes...

Jim Holst - thanks for the warning 'bout the bolts. Stubby ratchets - "I got them at Harbor Freight and they didn't cost much." That they didn't cost much is no suprise, that someone ordered something from Harbor Freight is. We still get the catalog just for the fun of looking at the extra super cheapo crap that they sell (and they won't stop sending it even though we've asked them to). I hope your wrenches last for a long long time.

    Cheers - Steve

I don't order from their catalog, they have a store here in town. I've found their wrenches and sockets to be good buys, sturdy and haven't broken one yet. Yes, I know Snap-on and other professional brands are better but I am an occaisional mechanic and can't justify the cost of them. I can buy a whole set of wrenches from Harbor Freight for less than the cost of one wrench from Snap-on. In many case the tool is seldom used so why pay top dollar?

I'll finish painting myself into a corner by saying sometimes I buy Craftsman too.

Hard enough to find it the back nut, congrats. I usually use a socket on a 4-6 inch extension and go at it from the front, weaving around the bracket. You might find a wobble adaptor to be helpful. It is actually not hard if you can see the nut.

That rear bolt is hard to reach. I use a universal joint on a ratchet extension to reach in there. I have to guide the socket onto the bolt by touch.
I recently picked up a set of stubby ratchet wrenches, 1/4, 3/6, and 1/2 inch drive. These ratchets have a hinged handle which sometimes helps in tight places. I got them at Harbor Freight and they didn't cost much.

A word of warning. The tension adjustment bolts are fairly weak and easily damaged. You won't believe what they cost new! They are hard to find, even in a fastener specialty store. I had to go to the dealer, $$$.
