Need opinions/help/concerns 200 1989

Since my son has taken control of my trusty 240 leaving me his Saturn,(no,it was NOT a fair trade)I'm considering adding another Volvo to the fleet.(also have a daughter w/drivers permit)I was thinking of a 740 or 940.I do 600-800 miles weekly, so drivers comfort and reliability are more important than speed(no desire for a turbo)What do you think, or should I look for another 240?Do they need the same'attention' the 240s require? I ran across a '92-940 w/162000 miles, but extremely clean in and out, for a $4400 asking price(dealer). Afraid to really look at it until I can see if it should be considered. Thanks,

I find that there are plusses and minuses to each.

I like the accessory layout of the 700/900s along with the wider engine
bay. No alternator right below the turbo or wire from the starter running
across the front(!) of the engine. And no nasty rear trailing arm
bushings to deal with. Much easier blower motor too. Better rust
protection (which may be an issue in NY).

That said, the 240s aren't horrible cars, and at least for some stuff like
brakes have better components (four piston front calipers v single piston
sliding ones on the 700s) at cheaper prices. Some things are just simpler
on a 240, like the seat mounting stuff (which I think is kind of a pain on
the 700s). Simpler wiring in many cases, and no delicate heater control
valve to worry about. Oh, and don't underestimate how nice it is to have
the distributor in an easily accessable spot.

For long trips, I would prefer a 700/900 (IMO the seats are that much
nicer).. but I would also prefer a 240 over most other cars out there.

the 700/900 cars are geenrally not as attention craving as the 200s. Both have a similar reliability. I would not hesitate to go with a 700/900 car, wit hthe exception of the 16v 4-cyl B234F. i have a 240 B230, and a 940 B234F, stay away from that engine! It is a major pain to take care of the interferance head with a very risky timing design. They are rare though. Just buy anything with a B230F.

I just bought a 92 745T w 165K on it. It was a one owner and had been cared for well. Many of the miles were long trips between Atlanta and Richmond.

As long as the body is straight, and oil has been changed regularly - along with some record of other repairs - timing belt, trans service - etc. - I would have no problem with a well cared for 940 with - even 200K.

I have seen comment that a older high mileage Volvo is better than one with lower miles - as most of what should have broke - has broke, and been replaced. Good highway miles are really far better for that B230 motor, and it loves to be run.

I think you will find that the 740 or 940 is far more comfortable than the 240. I have had all models - like the 240 a lot, but the controls, seats, comfort stuff to me is all better in the 7/9 series - especially the seats in the 940 - plus they are a bit more stylish.

By the way - I paid 4350 for my 745T.

    Good luck
    Andrew in AL
