All season radials on 960 900

We have have two sets of wheels for our 95 960 sedan: Summer alloys with Yokohama
205 55 R 16, and winter steels with Kumho 185 65 R15. The Yokohamas are harsh and bumpy. They are so low, the front and back bumpers and trim hit curbs. Makes my 960 ride like a Chevy Sprint. We have been thinking of putting good quality all season radials on our winter rims softer, better ride, and using those wheels in the summer. Here are the rim specs - Idno 6819704 7786ital w518 6Jx15x45. What kind & size can we put on these odd sized steel rims?

You could consider putting oversized touring radials on, maybe 215 60 R15 or even 225's. I agree that low profile tires make a luxury car ride like a shopping cart! I switched mine to Touranza LST's on our 940 and Michelin X1's on the 960. The ride is extremely smooth and comfortable. Hope this helps!

6J (6" wide) x 15 (diameter in inches) x 45 (offset in mm.) ... nothing odd about that size to me. 205/60/15 tires ought to work - they will be off by 0.2" diameter ... hardly any difference.

About the car being low ... how's the suspension? Especially in the back - the Nivomats may be shot.

Considering that you actually need winter tires, I wouldn't think about "all-season" tires. It's a compromise of everything. If it's anything, go with a set of grand-touring class tires.

Yes, we do need winters here. If we got some grand touring we would just have the tires sawpped on the winter rims for the summer. We have found the tire sizes, especially the Yokohamas are less common and as a result quite a bit more expensive. If we oversized, how big could we go on the winter rims?

Since your's is a 960 with rear independent suspension, I don't know how the clearances go. But FWIW, I've used 205/70/15's on my 745Ti, before I switched over to 215/60/16's.

Do note that any significant change in the tire size (total diameter) will affect the speedo and odometer. If it's accurate now, you prolly don't want to stray too far from it.

BTW, for clarification about my comment against "all-seasons" ... it applies to regular, low-speed rated passenger car tires. There are better performing tires, also billed as all-season, that do offer the traction and performance but have a tread pattern that does (somewhat) work in snow.

You might want to look into the Kumho HP4 716's ... reviews have been very favorable, all the more better that they're affordable too.

-- Kane ... again, just IMHO.
