Light bulbs in the Center Console 700 1987

I checked the FAQ, and nothing on this problem. So...

On my 1987 740 Ti, there appear to be three light bulbs in the center console. The trans is the AW 71 automatic. One console bulb is for the "PRND2L" quadrant, one for the shift indicator pointer within the quadrant, and one that lights the seat heater pictograms. These should all light when the headlights are turned on, but all three of them have gone dead at once. It's too coincidental for all the bulbs to have failed at once, I think, and the seat pictogram lights have flickered on and off a couple of times since this happened, so I'm sure it's a loose connection somewhere.

It appears that the sockets for all three bulbs have a solid grey wire and a solid blue wire. But these three seperate blue & grey bulb wires don't connect the bulbs together, or into the harness, anywhere that I can see with only the top panel of the center console removed. I'm concerned that I will have to pull the whole center console apart above and to the left (driver's side) of the fuse/relay box to see where these blue & grey wire tails connect. I assume that's where the problem is that killed all three of the bulbs at once.

Has anyone ever fixed this problem? Do I have to dismantle the center console completely, or is there some magic spot where the wiring for all three bulbs joins together and is likely to have been damaged?

Thanks!

I too would be interested in learning about this. My console has never been lit as long as I've had the car. Truth to tell, I thought it came without console lighting. Always thought it strange.

If I remember right , those bulbs have a common ground. Remove the little panel surrounding the shiftlever and it will all be revealed to you. To remove the panel loosen the two phillips screws in the bottom of the center tray. Also remove ashtray and the lid for the fuse block.

I thought I would follow up, for Thaddeus' sake if for nobody else.

I checked the bulb sockets with a multimeter, and amazingly enough, there was power getting to them and a good ground. So it was the bulbs that had burnt out after all. All three went within days of each other. One bulb for the shift quadrant, one for the seat heater switches, and one for the rear ashtray (which also lights the inside of the console box).

I bought the bulbs at the Volvo dealer, because they have the blue coating on them. If you buy a regular General Electric #73 bulb for about 20% of the price, you will only be able to find clear GE bulbs (no color).

Luckily, I did not have to trace the ground and power lines. These disappear under the relay tray and then go up under the instrument panel somewhere. Would have been a nightmare to track down a fault in these unless I pulled most of the dashboard.

Very late reply but I'm new.
The Volvo bulb part number for the blue bulb is 1323462.
These are, I believe, the same bulbs as the ones lighting the rocker switches.
I'm going to try the Ge as suggested.
