How here has access to, or knows a place that would be able to source me a 90+ bellhousing and 90+ flywheel to use along with my 82 m46 transmission. I would like to start the conversion maybe like spring break with removing all the stuff from the donor car. Then to actaully complete the project I need to find someone who can get me those parts.

Does it matter if the flywheel is from a turbo or n/a? this will be used in a 91 245SE.

Is the bellhousing the same for both the m46 and m47? Will the newer bell housing work on my cast iron m46 transmission?

Please email me at runabout4fun@yahoo.com if you can help.

The big stepped flywheel for a later model M47 equipped 240 non-turbo is basically the same (except for the CPS holes) whether from an intercooled (84 1/2-85) 24xTi or from any 740/760T. However the bellhousing crank position sensor requires the flywheel version with the peripheral holes, so that means later 240 ('89-on) or 700 or 700T (89 or 90-on?) only. Kind of rare, for a Volvo part. The bellhousing is the same as far as I can tell, except for the big cutout for the sensor. I have several spare bell housings (attached to M47's) but only one sensor compatible flywheel, for my own future 245SE conversion. I have another for the GT getting the B21FT, and that one has no holes. Each cost me $17, an hour under the car and a few contusions and lacerations. Happy to pull you one if and when I see another. Bell housing, no problem.

Okay this might all be different in the US, but worthwhile remembering when buying parts.

I once married up a M47 with a B19A in a 240 (whopping power of 70HP). Anyhow as I was working away I found that the M47 input shaft has a finer teething for the clutch drive plate than the M45 org box, so I had to get a new clutch plate. The clutch plate did not fit in the B19A (M45) pressureplate-flywheel. Hence I had to pull a flywheel of the B23A where I got the M47 from. This fitted nicely and the setup worked great for years (did I mention the whopping power?)

So the moral of the story: M47 driveshaft might not be the same as M45 driveshaft. The split might be crankshaft-flywheel.

    Reg,

    Jorn

      Hi Jorn,
FYI The changeover in the US from coarse input shaft splines to fine splines
was 1979. The 1979 M45 and M46 have fine splines and a single shifter
rail inside the tranny. I'd keep the newer flywheel and use the older throwout
bearing and it'll all work in the older M46 with the M47 bell housing on
      the M46.
