Auto tranny filter screen thing 200

In my 91 245SE with AW70 tranny... I have become slightly pissed off at my transmission. The shift from 2nd to 3rd... is kinda really soft and almost feels like slipping. Ever since I bought the car at 138k it has been like this.. the car currently has 156k. I would have thought this was normal.. BUT my uncle has 2 93 240's with the AW70 tranny.. and his 2nd to third shift is very quick and firm. I have flushed the tranny once.. and the crap that came out looked like it was used engine oil.. THAT BAD. I used the cheapest stuff, Coastal ATF, and it took 12 qts till the stuff looked somewhat better. I didn't flush till perfectly clean though.. since all I purchased was one case. I used the coolany lines to flush the tranny.. and not the drop the pan crap. Would using the cheap stuff cause this? Should I re-flush the system? Should I replace the tranny filter screen? Give me some help here so I can make my tranny feel like it is supposed to.

The "filter" is actually a nylon screen and is designed to catch only the larger particles. You wash it off, you don't replace it. If you decide to do this, make SURE you soak the fill tube nut in PBBlaster for a week in advance: it is guaranteed to be rusted tight. That is the biggest reason for ignoring the screen: the fill tube nut can't be removed.
You will also need a gasket, but make sure the fill tube nut can be loosened first.
It is possible to drop the pan with the fill tube and nut still on there, but you will have to remove the two bolts holding the fill tube at the starter and above. The car needs to be on jacks if you do this.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to change the filter before you wrote off the tranny as a filter that is getting clogged will cause hydraulic pressures to be low which might account for your soft shift. As far as fluid quality I know there are some who swear by the premium stuff and synthetics but I have always used just a "brand name" and it seemed to work OK.

I did that on mine but it didn't help my "slow to go into reverse when cold" problem but I didn't have any problems with the forward gears either.

the biggest thing i am wondering... is comparing non-synthetics to non-synthetics... does the cheapest stuff not work as well... the stuff I put in was 78 cents a qt.. compared to 2-4 bucks for the name brand.

There was a procedure posted a while back for changing tranny fluid that I will use on my son's car. First flush with the cheep-o stuff to dissolve and clean the gunk deposit build ups. After a 1000? more miles flush with a synthetic AFT fluid. This way the expensive synthetic fluid starts off clean and will stay clean longer. After the shock of paying over $60 for a case of synthetic, $10 for a case of Costal for a "pre-clean" doesn't even make me blink.

There has been many testimonials on the board claiming synthetic fluid "fixed" their transmission problems. It is supposed to extend the tranny life.

I have real doubts that Costal, Walmart, and other cheep-o brands aren't the same as the big brand names. They all have to meet the Dextron specification and they all probably come out of the same vat. This of course does not include synthetic fluid.

I tried to take the pan off my 900 and gave up after getting only a half turn in the PB soaked filler tube nut, during a two hours attempt. I would have taken the filler tube bolts off if I had known at the time. I prefer cleaning the barking gunk from inside the pan, cleaning the fuzz off the magnet, and in the case of AW70s transmissions, at least check the screen filter. Some folks on the board say the pans are usually clean, though. The pan gasket I ordered from FCP Groton came with a "free" filter.

If you do remove the filler tube nut, Steve had suggested using an anti seize on the threads before reassembly.

I don't know for sure if the cheap stuff doesn't work as well, but I'm sold on using synthetics in my transmissions. They have been effective for me and the extra cost is minimal. A lot cheaper than buying a new tranny...

I don't know, I really have no opinions one way or the other. I'm sure there are folks on here that have extensively researched this issue and hopefully they'll weigh in with their findings but you might be able to search the archives to see if this has come up in the past. When I put my M46 in I used Exxon brand ATF and it was a buck something per quart...

As Ringlee says getting that pan off can be a pain. I can almost guarantee that the screen will be clear and you will be waisting your time. Try a flush and refill with Mobil 1 synthetic. There have been many cases where this cured shift problems. On my 88 740 (same tranny) this immediatly cured delayed shifting 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd as well as an overdrive problem. I am sold on the use of a good synthetic.
