Front Door Speakers in a 79 Bertone? 200

Hey everyone!

I searched the archives about mounting speakers in the front doors but all I found were solutions that required mounting the speaker grill with the speaker. I really don't want to cut the door panel and would like to mount the speaker in the location where the stock one was. What I'm saying is that I don't want to mount the speaker grill also. Does anyone know what will fit there and not interfere with my window? Are the Bertone door panels different from regular 240s as far as depth goes?

Thanks in advance,
Erich Elmer

Look in a crutchfield magazine and see what size they reommend for any 240 series. All the doors use the same depth. You don't want to your original panel. Any speaker that comes close to the recommended depth will fit. If it is 1/16th to 1/8th too deep you can add few washers to the front of the speaker to pull it in to the car so to speak. All of this will be covered by the door panel.

      Hi Nelson!

Thanks for the info. How much do you think the door panels block the sound from the speakers? I would hate to put a lot of money into speakers that won't be heard very well. I really don't want to cut the door panel but the previous owner already did. For some reason he cut a hole behind each of the map pockets for very small, round Infinity speakers. The problem with this is that the map pockets rest against these speakers effectively blocking their sound. So, since they are already cut, it won't be such a sin! I would rather not do this because I really don't like looking at after market speaker grills sticking out of doors.

      Thanks for the info,
      Erich

I think crutchfield is great if you are clear on what you need. they offer decent prices and reasonable customer service. But in this case and installer would really be an asset. I think that going to a setup of sperates, mount the tweeter somewhere near but away from the woofer, is the way to go. I think you'll save somedepth and get great sound. the installer can make suggestions on how to 'hide' this stuff in plain view to meet your goals of it looking as stock as when you bought it. Don't worry about the panel blocking sound, it will, but so does a speaker grill. It's not a major issue with lower tones. The best place to put speakers would be in those holes behind the map pockets. There, you could go with a coaxial speaker, although seperates would still sound better. As long as the map pocket is more then ~ a half an inch away, it'll be fine. You might also consider collor matching the grills to help hide them a bit better. Again, talk to installer at local car stereo shop, they will be areal asset to this project.

Do your speakers look something like this?

Actually, there are no speakers where the stock ones are supposed to be. Also, on a Bertone door panel the speaker grill doesn't stick out like on my 86 245. The Bertone panel has a strip of burled wood that runs along the length of the door. Towards the end of the strip, by the hinge, there are some holes drilled into the wood that the speaker resides behind. This area is about 2" high by 4" long. My worry is that even if I find speakers to fit behind this, there is not enough open area to have good sound come out. I may just have to suck it up and cut the panel.

By the way, here is what is being installed:

Visonik sub box with 2 10" subs
600W amp (I forgot the brand)
      Swiss audio 6 X 9 3-way in the back
Swiss audio 6" 3 way in the front (if I decide to cut the panel)
Panasonic 40w 4 channel head unit (already in the car)

I'm new at this and am only putting this in because my brother gave me the sub box. My Bertone is black, lowered, dechromed with chrome wheels, leopard skin seat covers, and limo lights along the inside roof. When I saw it, I had to have it. My wife is mortified and refuses to ride in it. When she asked why I'm putting this sound system in I said "Since it looks like a pimp ride, it's going to sound like a pimp ride!".

      Thanks for all the input,
      Erich

Wow. I had a good laugh about the comments your wife made!

With that equipment list, my idea isn't what you want; I was gonna suggest you repair the original speakers if possible. I did only because it seemed a sure way to get the "right" speakers to fit what I found to be very small window clearance. I also wanted to preserve the original grills in the door panels.

But it doesn't sound if you are being fussy about keeping the Bertone stock, so you are probably looking for a custom solution for all that sound equipment that doesn't clash with the wood grain, and remain low profile. Well, then, I've wasted your time, as I can't help there. You have a bigger challenge than I had with my regular old 79 244.

          Hi Art!

You certainly haven't wasted my time. I always enjoy learning new things. The Bertone is my third and probably not my last Volvo. I always leave a car as "stock" as when I bought it. Your speaker tutorial may well come in handy one day.

          Thanks,
          Erich

For like $50- per speaker that can be fixed! New surrounds are common replacement on items on high end speakers (just like those!).

Assuming it's the same 4" speaker that's in my 87 240 then here's the deal. Many aftermarket 4" speakers will fit in the hole and the depth isn't an issue. You need to by an adapter plate so you can use your stock grill, your car stereo shop will have these or be able to get them for you. The problem here is that many aftermarket 4" speakers are to tall, the distance from between the speaker and the grill, not the speaker to the window. This is easy to check. When you go to the shop have them open the package with the plates, bring a grill with you, and set the speakers inside and try to put the grill on. On have alpine speakers in my doors and they're very borderline. So close in fact that I mounted the speaker behind the plate to gain the half a millimeter. I beleive MB Quarts fit but they're pricey. Infinitys do not fit. Alpines do fit and try some others. If the door is different then hopefully somebody will find this useful.
