Cause: Snowstorm; Effect: Tire Chain Questions 200

I pulled out the tire chains that had been in my trunk for a while. In the snowstorm for a realistic simulation I put the chains on (and in case it sucks tommorrow too). Got them on relatively easily and test drove them. The 2 extra links on both sides are hitting something when I drive. There were rubber bands with the chains, one has dissappeared. Are you supposed to hook these to the extra links on the outside of the tire or what. I may just wire them to the chains so they can't move but the rubber bands would be easier. Any one have any ideas? Thanks.

Don't know which chains you have but the ones sold by Volvo for the 200 series are only to be driven no faster than 35mph! Be careful and good luck.

Followup: Got the links tied off and the car is unstoppable. Our road has a substantial hill on it and cars were trying for a while and then giving up, the snow is like 4 inches deep with ice under it. My car did fine up and down it with the chains on. Wow they are great except for the roar when you are driving. Luckily it lets up above 20 MPH.

Speed limits vary, depending on the type of chains you are using, but you don't want to go much faster than 20 MPH.

I use regular bungie cords and run them in a triangle pattern, and yes, hooking the extra link to keep it from flying around. Best to size up what links you need, and then cut the extras off. The inside links were the ones that always made the noise/contact on my 245. Try and get short bungie on it and tie it off real close by so as to not get it wrapped on the brake stuff.

Seems the extras are needed/ help a lot in getting the chain on tight. I was thinking about getting some of those little cheater chain links that have a threaded deal to close the link and using them to hold the extra links tight.
