Transmission Fluid: What's the Difference between Type F and Dexron III 200

The 240s are peculiar in that they use Type F, whereas most other cars use Dexron III. No one can tell me what the difference is. Also, why do Volvos use Type F? What happens if you use Dexron III in the tranny? And does anyone know the history of the development of these two types of fluid?

Transmission Fluid: What's the Difference between Type F and Dexron III 200

    Hey Mike,

I went through this with my 79 and 82 a couple of years ago. I found pros and cons all over the place. I decided to be safe an go with what the swedes specify: Type F. Always. Its tried , and true. Ive been using it for years. Why change? And the price is right.

Everything in Volvo's line starting in 84, uses Dexron type ATF. There were a lot of cars that used to take Type F, but for whatever reason, it kind of faded away somewhere.

Transmission Fluid: What's the Difference between Type F and Dexron III 200

There are friction and viscosity differences.........in a nutshell Dexron = GM and Type F = Ford.

Some Dexron trannies will do fine on F, but NOT the other way around.

NOT ALL Volvo's use Type F. Early models did. What year is your car? Does the drain pan have a drain bolt? Volvo used BW trannies early that require F, as did the early AW's - mid 83 or so on all use the latest version of Dexron. (It's backwards compatible)

As a side note early trannies can and are rebuilt and use Dexron.

my 740 AW70/71 uses Dexron III. i believe the biggest difference between Type F and Dexron III has to do with the friction properties. meaning one type of fluid allows slippage between surfaces differently than the other.
