1989 760 GLE ALLEN BOLT OIL DRAIN PLUG SIZE, PLEASE HELP? 700

Hello guys!

I have some questions regarding a oil drain plug to my 89 760 gle. It appears that it is not the regular type of plug, but that of an allen type plug (what size allen wrench tool?), whereas an allen wrench/tool may be needed to remove it. However, could I simply replace this particular plug with a regular oil pan bolt of similar size? As far as I know my automatic transmission drain bolt is a 9/16 and not an allen bolt. Also my alternator and drive belts have gotten somewhat saturated with motor oil from a previous leak via timing chain area/distributor rotor. How much of an effect would this have on my alternator in terms of failure? Also how much life are left in my drive belts? The belts were saturated from the top ends, the pulley grooves were not, but have a slight residue of motor oil. All of your responses would be greatly appreciated!

Best Regards

It's a square, not an allen wrench. I believe that it's 3/8", and you could take a 3/8" drive ratchet or spinner file it down a bit and use it to drive the oil plug. Go check the FAQ, I'm sure this is in there somewhere.

Yes, the V6 does take loads of oil, hopefully you're going to be changing this on a regular basis. Belts are usually cheap, I'd change em.. but only after you've made sure that the engine is no longer leaking.

One other thing, does this engine really take 6.3 qts of oil?

Yes, it does take 6 quarts!

My oil pan drain plug is an outie (relatively large 6 sided head), not an innie-- I wonder if yours has been replaced...

Don't bother replacing the belts until you get the oil leaks sorted out-- the oil will ruin them all over again in short order. In the meanwhile you may want to apply some belt dressing if they are slipping.

Oil in the alternator is not a good thing in the long run-- clean everything up with a pressure watch and locate your leak ASAP...
