seat heater element - where to get one? 700

I have heated seats in my 745. Both front seats have burned elements. There is infinite resistance on the black (i think) connector that goes into the seat. The other connector measures around 4ohms on both seats.
Where can I get the bottom seat element and how bad is it to replace?

thanks - Nate

I have purchased from the Check Corporation previously. They have a fine product, but you will need to measure your seats and the hold down seams (for lack of a better description). They are not expensive.

Do they sell to individuals? There website says you have to contact one of their installers.

What ball park do they charge? Do the have duals available.

      Thanks

They sold to me as an individual. I received a few mailings which treated me as an installer, so maybe that explains it.

Four years ago the cost was just under $25 for one seat.

I don't know about the duals, but I doubt it. Their products are good.

Bad heat pads. - Thanks 700

I followed that schematic that Paul (spasske) emailed me(thanks). Determined that both elements have to be bad. There are only two wires that go to the seat heater pads from the thermo/relay. Both seats are open circuits measuring at the black connector that connects to the seat pads. they all absolutely have to be bad. Anyone know where I can get cheap seat heat pads? IPD wants $90/seat for them. Stupid p/o must have left them on year round.

    thanks - Nate

Bad heat pads. - Thanks 700

I just replaced the backrest heater on one of mine. It was $99 from volvo - backrest only. I don't know that the one from IPD is a dual I'd check before I bought it, unless half the heat was OK for you. I have to say that the backrest portion of the pad they sell does not look like it covers as large an area.

If you do install one, make sure it does not get folded in the installation. The hole that was burned in mine appears to be caused where there was a fold in the pad and the wires may have kinked or the double heat led to a breakdown.

It seems odd that both seats would be open. The coil resisitence is actaually *very* low. I seem to remember in the neighborhood of 4 ohms for both heaters in series. you could be reading both. I would double check again before I went searching for new heaters.

Do you have single or dual output heaters? The duals have two heater elements in the seat and one in the backrest, singles have one element in the seat and one in the backrest. The two have different wiring. You have dual output if you have a square black relay under each seat. what year is the vehicle?

      90 16v 745gle leather seats
I must have dual. There is a black relay under both seats that clicks on for about 2 secs when I flip the switch and clicks off. Both seats do this. I assume this is because of the open circuit for the one heat pad. This black 'relay' is also the thermostat too right? My diagnosis very well may be wrong. I tested all this stuff a few months ago and can't remember any of the specifics; wire color exact resistance values, etc.
I think I'll put 12v to the seat pad connector and see if it gets hot. That shoud be an absolute diagnosis.

BTW ipd wants $90/seat for the kit, so I hope my diagnosis is wrong.
thanks alot, those leather seats are cold in the morning.

You might try FCP Groton aswell.... I know they can get O.E. Volvo stuff... (my oil pump pulley was new in the blue volvo box from them)... and it was less than dealer price aswell...

A few things to be aware of, there is a switch in the passenger side that activates the heater on that side only when the seat is occupied. If you're troubleshooting the passenger seat, you have to have weight in it. Also the thermal relays operate off of cabin temperature so if your cabin is warm the seats wont be heating up. The relays have a duty cycle - on for a couple of seconds then off for awhile. They do not stay on continuously.

I can get you some more detailed wiring info later.

Here's a pic i took of the underside of my seat to show the wiring... you'll notice the where the connections enter the seat... the seat relay/thermostat.. and the pressure switch for when someone sits in the seat (that's that little black thing attached to the lower foam support and the outside frame near the centre spring on the right side)... obviously the passenger side...

Taking seats apart is pretty straighforward. It involves puncturing your fingers on sharp metal and subsequent cursing. Usually. Ok, it's not that hard. 4 bolts to pull your seat and a little prying, a little twistign of hog rings to get into the upholstery. You shouldn't need to get into the back adjusting knobs for what you need to do.
What you're going to want to do is visit the junkyards, and scope out decent passenger seats. The seat heater pad is the same, and of course that seat gets less wear. Some yards will not split up an interior no matter what, so ask first. You may have to buy a whole seat in a different color. Good practice. The heater pads just lay in the top of the foam- if the seat is trashed already you could just cut away the upholstery. Try to pull all the wires out when you take it, or at least cut them as long as possible. With luck you'll find good ones that don't have broken elements.

Or, you can buy replacements from IPD (or Volvo, if you're rich).
