axle bolts tightness 444-544 1960

Hello fellow PV enthusiast,

I went to inspect my front brakes this weekend and discovered that when you take the drum off, you get to take the bearings off to (this was surprisingly different from my 122) So I examined every thing and put new grease in, and then put it back together. How tight should the axle nut be? It was very easy to take it off, but I am unsure if that's how it should be. I tighten it up until the wheel spin got 'stiff', then backed off a flat so it would spin freely. I don't notice any play in the drum.

Obviously I don't have a repair manual, does anybody know of a good source for these (besides ebay). Has any body bought the cd from Scandcar?

thanks
shane

Usually you should thighten the nut with 7kg.m and then loosen the nut with 2 flats.

The torque is important since this ensures that all parts were pressed firmly together before loosening again.

Been meaning to buy the CD from Scandcar, but I've been getting by on photocopied Volvo shop manuals that I bought from Swedish Classics (www.swedishclassics.com, I think)a few years back. They're relatively helpful, but of course they assume you have al of the Volvo specialty tools, so sometimes some improvisation is necessary....thankfully we have Brickboard, which has been a lifesaver for me.

Volvo is odd in that it specifies a torque setting and you then back the nut off. Basically you tighten the nut to seat the bearing nicely, tighten slightly, turn the hub. When it gets tightish you back the nut off. You should be able to move the washer under the nut with your bare fingers, withou noiceable play on the hub.

    Regards

    Pete

Those just go barely finger tight, of course make sure the bearings are all nicely in their races and there is no slack. Too tight and the bearings will eat themselves within a thousand miles or less.
