speedometer not working 700 1988

My speedometer stop working,any idea how to check and replaced this item.
It is my understanding that this might be an electronic item.
Again any help will be appreciated.

    It is electrical and the most likely source of the problem is the wiring where it enters the plug on the differential. Mine has broken there. Of course, it could be mechanical as David mentioned. You can fix the wire if broken with a little work.

    The speedo and odometers are driven by a signal from the differentia. You do not state if the odometers work. This will help determine where the problem is.
