164 wheel question 140-160 1969

Will the 164 wheels from a 1970-71-72 fit a 1969 164?
Thanks

Yes. You'll have the advatage of a wider wheel I think (IIRC the '69 still had the 140-series 5J rim, 70- had 5.5J). If you don't care too much about offset (I think this is highly overrated anyway) you can use any wheel from a later RWD volvo as well, and even some FWD wheels that have the same pattern. I've seen 164s with almost all kinds of wheels, and must say that multi-x, draco or turbo rims don't look half bad on them.

164 wheel question 140-160 1969

I think the wheels on my 1970 164 are actually
for a 72/73 1800es, and they fit perfectly. I
think you can use any volvo wheels from any other
164 (except 1975), any fuel injected 1800, and any
140. I think you can also use other, later volvo
wheels from a 240 or 740 but that you should be
careful as to which tire to then use as wide
ones may rub against things they shouldn't.

Why not '75? Granted, the '75 wheels should be a bit wider, but that just makes for more desirable tire choices.

And on a related side note, I have had a set of 14" 240 steel wheels with 185/75-14 snow tires fitted. This past week I put those on my 164, and I am very happy with them. The handling on dry roads is a good bit more responsive even though the sidewalls are as tall or taller than the old meats. I was a bit concerned about clearance when chains were in place, but there is actually less rubbing there than there was with the stock tires.

They are also offset just a bit more to the outside I think, which makes 'em fill out the fenders a little nicer. Of course, this makes it wander a tiny bit on uneven roads...but not too bad.

164 wheel question 140-160 1969

You can use wheels from a 75 164 just like you can
use 240 and 740 wheels. They fit just fine, or so I've
read. I just meant that the fuel inject 1800s, 140s,
and 69-74 164s all have exactly the same wheels except
for width.

Other than a few spots of worn paint and some RustOleum primer in spots,
your 164 looks so much like mine it isn't even funny!
