B230F Head removal 700 1987

Are there any special tools need to remove a B230F head? This will be a junkyard removal, so if there are any "slash & burn" techniques that will make the job go quicker, I'm all for it. Also, if removal from a 240 or something else would be easier, feel free to provide that info as well. Anyone have a list of required tools?

Thanks,

Brad

Pick an engine that's still in a car. Very hard to put enough force to those head bolts on a loose engine. BTDT. Good luck.

Just a good 1/2" drive braker bar and the 16 mm socket on a 6" extension are all you need really. The exhaust manifold nuts can of course be stubborn. Once the intake and exhaust manifolds are clear and the headbolts are out the head will pop off with a light tug. Remember to disconnect coolant hose and sensors before lifting it free.

16mm, that's a kinda odd size. It's not a 12 pt head, is it? My 12 pt sets don't include 16mm - only have that size in my 8 pt impact sets.

Do you recall the size required for the intake and exhaust manifolds? How 'bout the cam cover?

      Thanks,

      Brad

Cam cover is 10 mm. Intake is 13 mm (but on a B21, a couple of 12 mm are in there too, but I don't remember the B230 exactly). The exhaust should be 13 mm. On the ten 16 mm headbolts (and this is from memory, so I am only "pretty sure") I used a 12 pt. myself but a 6 would be better. You can buy the one socket once we confirm the size. The breaker bar is the crucial thing. Oh and loosen the head bolts in the correct order recommended in Bentley and the green manuals to avoid stressing the head. About an hour to pull the head, I recall.

Head bolts are 14mm. Use a good 6 point socket. All manifold nuts are 13mm. Support bracket for intake are 12mm. You will need to remove the upper timing cover to remove/cut the timing belt. Timing cover bolts are 10 and 12. The water pump pulley has to come off to get the timing cover off. 10mm nuts. Unless the heater hoses look new, cut em. otherwise unclamp and keep em. oh yeah, valve cover, 10mm. I've found the best tool for the intake nuts is a 1/4 drive ratchet, extention, and 13mm swivel socket.
