water pump, coolant 700 1991

Folks,

The 740 needs a new water pump. Is there any reason to go to the trouble and expense of getting a new, real Volvo pump, or should I just get one at the local auto parts house? (I'm planning to keep this car a long time and I will be installing the water pump myself.)

What's the best coolant to use? Is the environmentally friendly coolant also Volvo friendly?

Thanks,

Pat McHenry

Just bought a pump (GMB) at napa for $42.00. Came with seals, gasket and new bolts. Looks like a nice unit.

I think you will get the most service (and be the happiest) with a new pump and not a rebuilt one. I have always used GMB replacement pumps and have been happy with them- I haven't had one fail. The carry a lifetime warranty. You should be able to find one for under $40.

Pumps are cheap, the cost is fitting them, and you'll be doing that yourself. If you can get a good brand from your local parts place, ie. one that has more indication as to its origin on it than "made in china", I'ld say go for it if there's a real price difference. As for coolant, it should definately say "suitable for aluminum engines" on it. If it does you should be fine.
