Two wiring harnesses in engine bay??? 700 86

I have just finished putting in an engine wiring harness in my 745 Turbo. All of the injector wires were fried as well as the ones leading from the starter and alternator.

My question is this, the connector under the coil (right hand passenger side of car) to which the engine harness plugs into, is also fried big time. I peeled about a foot of the loom away and all of the wires were bare. It appears these wires go into the firewall.

Has any one here had any experience with this problem and is there a replacement harness?????

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron. I just replaced (well, actually repaired) the engine wiring harness in my 86 740 Turbo. I had the same problem with the wires leading into the firewall. The only think I could think of to do was pull the connector apart and put heat-shrink tubing on each wire, somehow labelling the wires so you know where they go in the connector. You might be able to get that part of the harness from a salvage yard and splice it on inside the car, but other than that, I don't know what to do. Volvo probably sells the harness that goes through the firewall, but I have no idea on price. Let me know if you find a better solution as I may do the same on mine.

Were you able to replace the wires going from the main harness to the back of the distributor and knock sensor? I think that harness also goes through the firewall with no connector between the engine and the firewall, and my wires were bad in that area as well.

Re: Two wiring harnesses in engine bay??? 700 86

Thanks for the input. I just finished installing the new harness. As to the one going into the fire wall, I made a pigtail from a junk yard harness from a non turbo 740. I exposed the wires all the way to the fire wall, and had to cut off about 8 inches to get down to some good insulation. It is a real tight place to try and splice wires.

I found a great item at the auto parts store, a butt connecter made of heat shrink with solder inside. I had to buy a heat gun to make it work, (small pencil blow torch was to hot) but well worth it. The splice is soldered and water tight. As yet I have not rewrapped the harness down to the firewall.

There are still some fried wires lurking about, one three prong connector going to what looks like the ingnition ballast, is next on my list. I hope this helps otheres who we know will have the problem.

      Ron

Hi Greg, No I havenot replaced any thing but the standard harness. I see that there are many more fried wires under there. How far did you unwrap the wire harness?? By the way who said these were easy to work on???

Re: Two wiring harnesses in engine bay??? 700 86

Hi Ron. I unwrapped most of the tape off the passenger side harness going from the engine harness connector to the firewall. Some of the wires on mine were OK, but others were toast. Fortunately, they were OK back near the firewall, so I just put about 6 inches of shrink wrap on the bad end near the connector. As for the other wire harnesses in the engine compartment, I pretty much removed all the plastic insulating sleeve and checked all the wires, using shrink wrap, tape, or replacing bad segments. The only thing I couldn't deal with were the "shielded" wires going to the distributor and knock sensor. I couldn't find any wire that would be similar, so I just prayed they were OK and put some of the black plastic insulation sleeve over them.

I've found that if you go to a salvage yard and pull the INTERIOR wiring harness out of a 240, you can cut it up and use the black plastic sleeve and even some of the wires for splicing together new and repaired segments of the engine wiring harness on any Volvo. I haven't ever found new black insulation sleeve like Volvo uses, so the next best thing is the used stuff from the interior of a 240 that hasn't been subjected to the engine heat and harsh environment.

As for being easy to work on, I guess it's all relative. A friend had a couple Audi Coupe GT's a while back , and I can assure you Volvo's are easier to work on than those things!

        Greg
