rt of steering column dash facia plate 700 '89

think i saw this abit ago but can't find it now. Rt side of steering column dash facia plate removal to replace switch ID light bulb.

Left side went fine, right side has metal clip @ mid point of facia I can't get to release. I assume it does, but pushing left, right, up, down doesn't do it. I'd rather not remove the knee bolster.

Anybody?

thanks

Metal clip? You're not seeing the switch spring clip, are you? Volvo recommends using a "bone knife" (i.e., a soft, non-marring, narrow blade) to pry out the trim fascia. Mine came out easily, working from right to left. Once the fascia is loose, then you have access to the switch bulb without having to remove the switch.

Re: rt of steering column dash facia plate 700 '89

Problem solved! Decided to go to bigger tools and more pressure removing face plate. Problem spring I couldn't disengage in middle of face plate attaches to a tab on the back of the plate with the other end forming a huge "open" J shape applying pressure against the back (inside) of the dash. J turns toward the steering column behind the dash and is made of heavy guage spring steel.

Thanks again for the help

Thanks Steve. No, the facia is loose except for this 5/8" high, bright metal clip to the right of the switches. It goes into a 3/4" square hole on the dash (not the black plastic cluster trim) to the left of the volvo stereo. I also tried compressing it against itself in case hidden from view is a prong that pushes against the back of the dash console, no luck.

Re: rt of steering column dash facia plate 700 90

I did this exact thing to my 1990 760T last week. The clip you speak of was very tight. I applied pressure and finally the plastic facia that holds the switches came loose and the metal clip fell behind the knee bolster. I put it on and off a couple of times and the clip never came off with the plasitc facia piece. I believe that the end of the J shape is actually behind the dash and will not come off. The metal clip attahes to the plasic piece and will come off. I hope this helps.

Yes, you are correct and thanks. I just needed bigger pliers and screw driver + better powers of observation to see the bottom loop of the j behind the dash. Yipee~! Very nice having the switch id plates lit last night. I'd been doing things by feel or waiting till passing a street light to be sure i hit the right one.
