replacing factory radio 700 92

I need to replace the radio/tape deck that came with my 740 turbo wagon '92. I have been told by some of the shops that because of the additional amplifier on this model that I need to completely re-wire the car to replace the deck with an aftermarket radio/cd player.

Is it necessary to re wire? and should I expect to pay $150 to $180 for this service?

Re: replacing factory radio 700 92

Hello- I have a 1987 760T with the seperate amp. I added an Alpine Head Unit that had 4 40W outputs and the seperate amp was good for 30W into 4 channels. The installer put in the head unit and two additional 6X9 in the rear (only had 4 door speakers prior) for $825. The total labour worked out to be 1.5 hrs at $80 per hour. This was mainly to wire and install the 6x9's. The existing amp was used to power the two 6x9 and the head unit powered the door speakers.

In the end it does seem like a lot of money. They can either toss or use the amp as the head units nowadays may have a cleaner sound than amps of 10 years ago.

Re: replacing factory radio 700 92

I just replaced factory radio with pionner cd player unit on my 92 745.

Bought the unit from crutchfield.com and new face plate and wiring harness were provided for free, along with good installation instructions.

This is something you could do yourself.

Re: replacing factory radio 700 92

i,ve replaced the radio in the last 3 volvos ive had and just bought a separate wiring harness for about £30 that goes from the new radio into the standard volvo amp, no messing around with connecters or splicing it in its just plug and play

Re: replacing factory radio 700 92

I agree with randy, i have 2 86 740s 1 turbo and one gle i have replaced the radio in both of them myself, if i am thinking right i paid less then $50.00 for the wire harness ( which connects the new radio to the current harness ) and the face plates ( install kit ). it was so easy after i did my first one i didnt even get the wire harness for my second one because theres only i think a totall max of 8 wires you use. the amps for factory radios in volvos are pulled, any decent radio shop will pull them amp when they install the radio for you, the cheesy ones will leave it there and make you believe it is still in use when it really isnt.

Re: replacing factory radio 700 1986

You make it sound obvious, Jason. I'm in the same boat with an 86 740GLE, and it looks to me like I'll have to pull a whole mess of wires to get to a connector that the adapter [Metrowire 70-1119] might fit. [It's raining, and I haven't tested the match.] If it is that connector, it would be possible to cut on the other side and splice in the new radio, if the connections were matched. Is that how you did the second one and, if so, how did you identify how the two sets matched up? Another consult has already convinced me to scrap the amp, so I just need to know what to tie where. Thanks.

Re: replacing factory radio 700 92

I wouldn't expect to pay that kind of money for what needs to be done. You basically replace the radio and using the old connectors splice into the existing wires usually with a connector kit that comes with the radio. The old amplifier is just bypassed.

I would get a second installer to give a price for the service- the estimate you got is out of line.
