Sunroof vent position 700 88

After reading the FAQ, I resently discovered that my sunroof is suppose to open into a vent position. However, after trying this out, I find that mine does not move at all after I close it. How do you fix the problem of the sunroof being stuck. The FAQ describes how to do it if you have a crank but i have an electric motor. Mine opens and closes just fine, only it won't move to the vent position.

Thanks again.

Re: Sunroof vent position 700 88

After looking at the motor and playing with the switch on the dash, I found out that the motor has been miswired whole time since the car was made. The wires were set backwards so that the car was opening the sun roof when I was actually pressing the close button. Anyway, I took out the motor, rewired the thing and now it works fine. Only problem is that it doesn't close the roof all the way when I go to close it. Barely stick open, just enough to prevent it from shutting tight when I make it come down from the vent position. I'll tinker with it and solve that. Also, is there suppose to be anything that keeps the small rectangluar piece of roofing inside the car up? The roofing just hangs there and you can't get any air when its open to vent. Oh, well. Thanks a bunch for the help on the motor.

Well, that's one possibility that we hadn't considered! Good luck in the remaining task. Sounds like you'll have a fully functioning sunroof soon...just in time for winter.

Re: Sunroof vent position 700 88

The easiest way to check the motor is to pull it out and run it right in your hand.

If the motor runs all 4 ways;

1. From the closed position (you should remove the motor with the sunroof in the closed position) clockwise to one of the open positions. then

push the switch the opposite direction -

2. it should run counter clockwise back to its original position.

push the switch in the same direction you did for 2.

3. it should run clockwise again to the other open position

then push the switch in the opposite position

4. it should run clockwise back where you first started.

The motor must perform all 4 functions - if it does, the problem may be mechanical, if it does not - then it is the switch or the motor

You could now detach the motor and run it directly off your battery, checking for all four functions. If it runs OK then your problem is the switch.

I do not remember the wiring, but as I recall it was not hard to figure out, and I'm pretty sure the ground is black.

I cannot check it out because I have converted both of my 740s to a crank.

A used crank cost me $15, I even got a spare one for future use!

If you do get a used crank, be sure to get the cover plate too. You will be surprised how easy the job is and how well it works.

Re: Sunroof vent position 700 88

BT: Just to add to Shatz's posting: the roof-retract switch is a 2-position rocker switch.(1), If you put your finger at the very TOP of the switch and push it IN, the roof should open to the vent position, which is just the rear part of the roof going upward, the rest of the roof doesn't move. To close the roof while in the VENT position, push the BOTTOM of the switch. (2), With the roof CLOSED, if you put your finger on the BOTTOM of the switch and push it, the whole roof slides back. A lot of these older roofs get *cranky* (pun intended), don't want to open or close correctly. One of the most common problems, other than one edge or side being higher or lower than the others, is that the little wind-flap, which is at the front of the roof opening, attached to the car itself, i.e., it does NOT slide rearward, it merely pops up--or should--when the sunroof is retracted, it should pop DOWN when closing the sunroof but doesn't...it keeps the sunroof from closing all the way. I usually have a large-ish pocket knife in a holster on my belt, so I use the blade to hold the windflap down while I hit the TOP of the switch to retract the open sunroof. Give it a try! --PD.

Re: Sunroof vent position 700 88

I think you might want to be sure it actually can do that.I have no idea when the vent position (rear end of sunroof tilted up slightly) was introduced. My 92 has it. If it should, then I'd check out the switch, especially if your motor operates the roof. In order to actitivate mine, I continue to depress the close position and it will pop up. To close it you press the swtich to open the roof. There is always a pause between those modes.
