No start after fill up w/ switch in on position 200 1989

this has happened to me three times in the past 2 weeks

When I get gas

If I completely turn off the car and fill up it starts right back up and off I go.

If I leave the key in the on position to listen to the radio,

The car will not start after fill up

NO JUICE to STARTER solenoid from ignition switch

I jump the starter solenoid direct to the battery and the car starts right up.

Drive off

if I stop and I turn the ignition switch off and on it always restarts ???

It seams that the sitting in the on position is causing some problem but what ???

Any ideas ???

Bohdan - I agree with kingfish, I would not frame my response the same way however.

There are some evil consequences possible when you leave your ignition on when you fuel your auto. For that matter, there can be evil consequences to leaving your ignition switch on at any time when the car is not running.

BTW, always shut off your engine when fueling.

      Thanks

Since it is electrical in nature I thought it might be a preliminary symptom of a problem coming down the road

If this happened to me I'd pull the switch.

You know the electrical part is removable by two (slotted I think) screws holding it to the lock mechanism. Inside it operates the ignition, start, accessory and key-in switches separately by a pair of plastic cams -- this is not a rotary "selector" switch with moving armature.

My guess is there is a distortion of contact or cam caused by heat brought on by contact resistance.

I think that's a feature. I don't think you're supposed to be able to go from "ON" to "START" after being in "ON" for a bit. (To prevent you from say, hitting it with your knee and zinging the gear while driving)

Same idea as if you stall: you can't just go to start, you have to return the switch to "LOCK" and then back to "START".

Try leaving the switch in the accessory position while you refuel, that's what it's for!

      Paul

      Thanks

But it won't start at all even if I go back to the "off" position and try to restart

The only way I got around it was to surpass the ignition switch all together

Left the ignition in the "On" position and direct contact battery to solenoid to start

I will try the accessory position to see if it makes a difference.

Here's your solution, man: Turn off your damn ignition! Must you always listen to the radio?

Hmm haven't heard of this one before, but I suppose the only thing you can do is work your way back to the ignition switch with the multimeter. Should be pretty easy to check since it is so reproducible.

    Good luck
