Can a car eat starters? 200 93

Help! Need to know if something in my car could be causing the repeated failure of a succession of starters (on fourth new/rebuilt one now)or if I'm incredibly unlucky enough to get 4 bad rebuilds in a row. Here's what happens: After I put the unsuspecting new/rebuilt starter in it starts flawlessly for 4 to 6 weeks then it starts to make a noise like gears are jamming together or slipping off when starter is engaged. After awhile it's so bad it won't start. I take the starter out and the bushing on the end of the bendix shaft has failed causing enough radial movement of the gear that it slips off the ring gear causing the noise. I'm stumped - any thoughts appreciated. They're really getting suspicious of me at the parts store...

I think the main question is who makes these starters. Are you going to the local auto store? Clearly it seems that the starter is failing due to a defect and nothing else.

that sounds really weird. If the flywheel ring gear was shot I would expect the gear on the starter to be all chewed up. I'd guess you are getting some bad starters. The Bosch starter in particular is pretty robust. I have never had the gears or bearings fail on a Bosch starter. And my cars are primarily city driven with lots of starts and stops. The only failures I have ever had were the fault of the solenoid. Are you getting Hitachi or Bosch rebuilt starters. The Bosch starters are worth the extra money in my opinion. The are much larger and more powerful then the Hitachi type. I suppose Volvo switched to Hitachi for weight/cost savings. The Hitachi motor on my 89 had a meltdown so I'm not too impressed with them.

When I pull the failed starter out there is no evidence of damage to either the teeth on the starter or to the ringgear. Also, the starters are marked with "World Wide Automotive" and I did not see any marking on there indicating Bosch or Hitachi and I sure wouldn't know the difference. Yeah these were all from the same store and I'm thinking (now that I've got some good brickboard input) that the machine pressing in that bushing on the end was having a bad day when these 4 starters were remanufactured. And I'm surprised at the lack of quality control. I may have a hard time convincing Vince at the parts store to give me another one though.

If it looks the same as the original starter it is probably a Hitachi. The motor on the Hitachi is small and looks like a straight tube. On the Bosch starter the end caps on the motor are distinct.

    Hi Rob,

Problems with your ring gear (wear, damage etc) can cause this type of thing, although it's quite rare.

    Rich.
