Can a car eat starters? 200 93

Help! Need to know if something in my car could be causing the repeated failure of a succession of starters (on fourth new/rebuilt one now)or if I'm incredibly unlucky enough to get 4 bad rebuilds in a row. Here's what happens: After I put the unsuspecting new/rebuilt starter in it starts flawlessly for 4 to 6 weeks then it starts to make a noise like gears are jamming together or slipping off when starter is engaged. After awhile it's so bad it won't start. I take the starter out and the bushing on the end of the bendix shaft has failed causing enough radial movement of the gear that it slips off the ring gear causing the noise. I'm stumped - any thoughts appreciated. They're really getting suspicious of me at the parts store...
