Brian,
My 86 245DL came with a Cam rack. I think that year also may have used a ZF rack, but I'm not certain. Look at the outboard end of the rubber rack boot, if it's a Cam rack the outer boot end has a opening the diameter of the tie rod and is held in place with a small hose(like)clamp ... if it's a ZF there is a plastic disc in the end of the boot with a hole in the disc where the rod passes through. The end of the rubber boot fits over the plastic disc. Those are the only two makes of stock racks used on the 200 series. I'm not sure but the inner ties rods on both Cam and ZF may be the same ... but you'd better check with you parts supplier. Consider replacing the outer tie rod ends and ball joints while you're at it. If there's any leakage at the rack seals under the boots, I'd get a rebuilt rack. I recently replaced the rack, large control arm (anchor)bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearings, brake rotors and strut inserts (Boge, Turbo Gas)on my 86 245. The front end feels better than new. Well worth the effort and expense. I'd recommend getting the Bentley 240 service manual if you plan to do any serious front end work. Good luck.
I hope this is helpful.
