Throttle Body Cleaning Issues 900 93

I've been getting 14 mpg in the city in my '93 945T (58K) and have been gradually re-baselining the vehicle that I bought in August in an attempt to address the issue. So far, I've replaced the air filter, distributor, rotor, plugs and am about to put new spark plug wires in as well. I'm about to embark on cleaning the throttle body as the next likely culprit, since, so far, at least, my mileage in the city still bites the big one.

Given this lousy mileage, I was sure that the plugs would be oily and/or otherwise fouled when I changed them due to all the gas beind dumped into the cylinders. WRONG. The plugs looked OK-- crusty white-- just like they're supposed to look in the pictures. Back in Aug I had some BG 44K run through the system at my 55K service. Would this stuff clean out the throttle body, and does the condition of the plugs indicate that the throttle is working as it should? I guess I'm reluctant to take this apart unless it's necessary. The condition of the plugs could suggest another problem, I suppose. I had the timing belt changed in Aug, and it could've been incorrectly installed. But wouldn't the ignition timing be automatically and correctly reset when the belt is changed -- assuming a correct install.

Woudl appreciate any thougths

James Russell

See the 700/900 FAQ for ways to test O2 sensor. A dying, dead, or lazy O2 sensor will hurt your mileage. You might also double-check your FPR, and ECT sensor as well, but a really wasted FPR and/or ECT would probably yeild fouled plugs and other performance issues.

BTW, my 91 940T gets close to 20 mpg in mixed driving; wife's 95 945T gets a bit better (lighter right foot than me!).

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning Issues 900 93

ignition timing is not adjustable on your year.

cleaning the tb probably isn't related to fuel mileage...if your car is running well, i.e., not dying at stops which is the classic dirty tb issue, it prob doesn't need cleaning.

It's possible the 02 sensor is lazy or shot, read the FAQ on how to test it in the car.

I would expect around 19-20mpg around town based on my 87 760T and 90 740T cars, but your 940T is somewhat heavier and geared maybe a little longer legged. Coupled with a heavy foot around town....still, you should get at least 16-17.

Mileage on my 90 740T is down to 18 this month because of the oxygenated fuel that is being pushed on us in the DC area. Or it could be because of the new rising rate fuel pressure regulator and 15 lbs of boost....

Guys, thanks for the inputs. I GIVE UP. Show some mercy. What's all this about the 15 PSI boost? The car otherwise runs great and is a joy to drive particularly with the new Boge Turob Gas shocks and my new Bridgestone RE 930I tires.

It's the 15psi of boost. Ask me how I know.

        Warren and John, too.

The oxygenated fuel will not give you the mileage that you are used to. Trust me. We did this in Maine for a few years, as I discussed last night. If you can find real gas do a comparison. The oxygenated stuff dropped my mileage 7 or 8%. The guys with the V8 trucks really took it hard. As to your turbo mods: You are pushing more air, so you need more gas. But you go faster, so you cover more distance more quickly. So if you are using more gas to go farther...This sounds like calculus to me. Now I have a headache.

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning Issues 900 93

What's oxygenated fuel? FWIW, my 93 non turbo 945 is getting 17.25 mpg in mostly city driving and my 91 turbo 945 is getting 18.79 in mixed (more highway than city) driving. I was considering new plugs, wires and have AMSOIL air filters ready to install in both. For gas I use AMOCO 93 octane in both cars. How can I know if it is oxygenated or not and who sells un-oxygenated fuels?

          Thanks

          Steve

Re: Throttle Body Cleaning Issues 900 93

Due to the Global Warming Theory, our government now tells us what kind of gasoline we can burn. There have been several different formulas sold in different places. Most of the "reformulated" gas doesn't work as well as the "good ol' stuff".

Depending on where you live, you may or may not have to use it. Depending on a lot of other things, your gas mileage may suffer if you use it.

Just filled up with Mobil 93 this morning. $1.59/9, and supposedly the old formula.
