Volvo special tool 5284 200 '82, '84, '88

Just to let you readers know that it is possible to get some dealers to order Volvo special tools. I ordered the "crankshaft counter-hold tool no. 5284" from the Volvo parts counter here in Eugene,OR with no problems other than a short delay when the tool had to be special ordered from Europe. This is the tool used to hold the crankshaft on the B230 engine when changing timing belts. It turns out the tool is made in Switzerland (probably a watch manufacturer's sideline). It is really impressive. It is built of very heavy steel, chrome plated, and comes with it's own pegboard hanger and outline decal so you can remember where it is supposed to hang. All of this for only $32.17 US$!

    Brickheads,

My Volvo dealer wasn't very interested in trying to help me get the Special Tool #5284.

Does anyone have a part number (Volvo or SPX) or contact info at SPX? I can't find much useful information on the tool at the SPX (Kent Moore Tool) site.

    TIA,

      Randolph:

I've got two possibilites for you. I'm in the process of buying that tool myself.

First, I've got a phone number (Ohio) for Kent Moore Tools, which I got from the parts guy at my Volvo dealer. 810-574-2332

Second, I found the tool on Baum Tools' web site (baumtools.com). They want about $57 for it; I'm trying to beat that price.

Good luck. If you think of it, let me know what you find out.

Here's the info from my packing slip:

      SPX Corp.,655 Eisenhower Drive, Owatonna,MN 55060-1171

      tool #=v9995284

It works GREAT,just remove the tensioner pulley from the front of

engine, insert the tool onto the harmonic dampner (central pulley) and

place hole of tool onto stud of tensioner pulley. Torque away!!

I can't wait to use it again on my wife's 740.

      Good luck. Genaro.

    James:

I bought one last month also, but from SPX corp. I got the same tool as you,but made in Sweden. This tool works beautifully. I had to use my leg to push the breaker bar and loosen the center bolt and the tool held securley. I think the job was so much faster than before because the tool did not let the crank get out of alignment with the other 2 gears. Anyone who has to change a timing belt him/herself should have access to one of these (it sure saves time compared to the "rope trick"). Good luck, Genaro.

      Genaro,

My dealer ordered through SPX also. Spx then ordered the tool from Europe. Apparently the tool is made in several places. I'm looking forward to my first timing belt change which will more than pay for the tool. If only it would stop raining!
