Auto shifts too early?! 700 1986

I have a friend who knows a good amount about cars but wasn't sure about this... so here it goes... If you use the stock automatic transmission and start it off in 1st gear, and floor it and when it gets to about 5.5k rpms take your foot off the gas and push the shifter up to 2nd, and repeat the same thing and push to drive and repeat and push the OD button... is that bad for the transmission? Any effects at all or anything? I'm looking for whatever you all have to offer about this. I only ask about this because I noticed today for the first time that the car shifts way to early... the redline is at 6k and the car shifts JUST before 5k. Why so early? Thats crazy... its missing out on some power that could be used.... but on the other hand I don't want to shift through on an auto if its bad. What I don't understand is if its ok to do that on an auto then why wouldn't anybody do it...? Also what about this new geartronic Auto-manual tranny's you can get? Is it the same idea just meant to be more convenient?

I just mash the pedal to the floor and don't let up - i shift manually from 1 to 2 to d when i want the power - i usually shift by 5500 rpms. not much more up there like the other guys said. as for the life of the tranny, i wouldn't worry about it, as i have 264,000 miles on mine with synthetic fluid in it. it drives like a dream still. :)

There really isn't much usable power above 5,000rpm on a stock B230F engine. There is a reason that your slushbox shifts when it does. I have an M46 in my 245 and I can tell you from experience that there is really no practical reason to revv the engine to 6000. Those last 1000 rpm's take longer to wind out than you would think, and you enter the next gear at a higher-than-ideal RPM. And as Gene mentions, it's probably not a good idea to run an old, high mileage engine up to the redline on a regular basis-unless you want to throw your #1 con-rod. But if you really want it to shift later, you can always adjust the kickdown cable.

Just because the maximum safe engine speed (before the explosion) is 6,000 RPM does NOT mean the transmission should be shifting there. Your transmission shifts a little early, not a lot. You can adjust the kickdown cable a bit tighter with the nylon nut behind the throttle drum so that the cable is at full detent with the accelerator pedal mashed into the carpet (engine off).

You'll be a whole lot better off letting the transmission decide when to shift, 'cause if you mis-shift on your 14 year old brick with Gawd knows how many miles on it, you're sure to find Swedish iron just flying out the side of the block.

my 14 year old brick only has 94,000 miles on it. And its in excellent running condition. I know people who have a 95 850 Turbo with more miles on it than my 760 turbo. :) But I appreciate the advice... :)
