power window quirks 200 1990

With the onset of colder weather, the power windows, wich have worked flawlessly all summer have gone bonky again.

When the car is stone cold, the windows work fine. If I drive for a while with the heater blowing as well as it can, the windows stop working. I can do two things. If I turn the temperature down, the windows start working again after five minutes or so. If I continue to blast (?) the heat, the windows will wake up again. I had thought that this was related to some temperature differential somewhere, but I believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny too.

Where are those relays for the windows, anyway? On top of the gas tank, or inside the left rear door panel?

Re: power window quirks...P.S. 200 1990

A liitle hint for reassembly. Dap a little dielectric grease in the "rocker" part to hold the springs in place then dap some on the springs to hold the balls on the springs. Place the "v" contacts in the base (the part the wires plug on to), when you turn the rocker over to snap it back togther, (hopefully) the springs and balls stay put.

Re: power window quirks 200 1990

Steve is right on. This problem likely occurs because there aren't any window relays - the high current for the motors flows directly through the switch contacts, and the resulting arcs cause pitting and corrosion of the surfaces. Take 'em apart and clean 'em up, or try your luck at the nearest U-Pull.

Re: power window quirks 200 1990

MittenHed,

I have found that the window switch contacts get scorched over time. If it is a window other than the driver's it can be either switch, i.e. the front passenger window fault can be on the driver panel or the passenger's panel. As far as I know, there is no power window relay. I have fixed mine by disassembling them, cleaning the contacts with fine (220) sandpaper. Do this on the table, on newspaper. The little parts tend to shoot all over the place when you pop the top off. And it's a bitch to put back together again. Inside are 2 ballbarings, 2 springs and two "v" shaped contacts. Have patience, and good luck!

Steve M.

Re: power window quirks 200 1990

Thanks

It is all the windows, from any switch. Is there some central point that all the window power runs through?
