HELP! water pump 200 83

hey

i just finished installing a new (napa) water pump in my wagon. at first things were ok...no leaks engine operating at proper temperature etc. then two days after i was walking to my car when i noticed a puddle under my car. the heater return i think thats what its called to the rear of the pump was dripping. i put the gasket on there and it seemed like a real tight fit. what can i do to stop this leak. i figure im probably gonna have to start from scatch ( take everything apart again ) but where would i get another rubber seal if its been damaged.

p.s. the one on there before seemed like it was crushed and somewhat deformed. im wondering if the new one simply rolled over the lip and is leaking that way?

please help

cory

Put vaseline on all rubber parts, make sure the surfaces are clean, and when you install the pump, the first contact point is the big rubber seal at the top of the pump. Lift the pump up so the top seal makes good contact, and then push in.

Re: HELP! water pump..same happened to me a few weeks ago 200 83

I had my pump installed, car back together (83' 242 turbo) and running fine. I noticed that the damn deal was leaking, and there is no room to loosen the heater return tube from the block on a turbo model, so i couldn't pull it back(maybe 1\4" clearance). I found out that i tore the seal when installing it, causing a decent size leak. I took it all apart and bought some new seals, and had to redo it.

tips-------> Install this o ring onto the tube first (after cleaned well) and slide it back into position. Some spit (good lube) works well to help it slide on.

Redo the gasket seals, (clean surfaces), and even apply some permatex high tack sealent on both gasket sides. When installing the pump, slip the heater tube in, and make sure to pull up and seal the pump with the head before tightening bolts. Use a fairly weak antifreeze mixture at first when running it, then drain some out and add a bit more coolant after it has been run for a while and warmed up (antifreeze can cause leakes easier than plain water can, in my experience).

good luck, its a sucky job to do, but when done it will be good to go for a long time.

    Zack

I've recently had a similar problem. You can use a tube of silicon gel, to make a seal, but I wouldn't recomend it. You should be able to get another seal from a local dealer.

    Good Luck!

Re: HELP! water pump 200 83

ok sounds like ill be starting over again. but there is one thing id like to correct this time. the manual claims there is a drain on the radiator and one under somewhere under the exhaust manifold. i have a nissen (not nissan) radiator thats about a year old and i saw no drain on it. attempt number one was a mess. i covered the alternator because i just saw it coming but there was quite a puddle of antifreeze on the ground before it was all done. i just undid the hose at the water pump. i wouldn't mind being able to save a little of the green stuff if i could. only idea i have is to punch a hole in the old hose and just replace the thing. any ideas or tricks my manual might have overlooked?

I'm not sure about the drain. i had the same situatioin, but I was unable to find a drain either, when I was doing a radiator flush...I just disconnected the lower tube, and drained it and did my thing...but other then that, I couldn't tell you. Sorry, and good luck again. :-D

I also have a Nissen radiator, and had to drain it from the lower radiator hose connection. It did make a mess, but I had a 5 gallon bucket to catch most of it (make sure to remove splash pan if you have one). I recently bought a lower hose for about $13, so unless it needs replaced, you probably shouldn't cut any holes in it. Overall its a somewhat messy job, and I would recommend some new antifreeze and water, and once everything is back together and sealed, you should be set.

I just drain the cooling system using the drain on the side of the engine block. I use a 5 foot long piece of hose that fits the barbed end of the drain, snake the other end of the hose under the car and into a bucket by the side of the car, open up the drain with an open end or box wrench and proceed to save the coolant into the bucket.

Generally I undo the lower radiator hose at the radiator to drain into a pan under car. Have to aim the hose well, but I always lose some anyway.
