Changing from 9004 to H-4; which wire is which? 200 89

I'm ready to convert. Anybody have a diagram? I'm going to use 55/60w bulbs at first, so no new relays.

I'm a little bit curious about this conversion. Are you simply replacing the bulb type in your plastic bucket TV headlamps, or is this a complete front end overhaul, maybe with the four light set-up (pre-86), or euro lights? I'm not sure what H4 are, could you guys enlighten me?

of course, this will leave your bulb out light telling you a light is out on low beam unless you patch into the low beam circuit BEFORE the bulb out relay. I don't know where this can be done other than at the relay board (doesn't mean it can't be done, just that I don't know).

I went through a similar procedure installing e-spec lights on my Audi. By running separate relays for each light (a total of four, one for high and one for low beam on each side) i was able to avoid getting a bulb out signal, (of course if the bulb actually were burned out i wouldn't get a signal either, but you usually can tell when you have a headlight out). Might have been overkill but driving with the light out indicator on all the time is really annoying and you would never know if a bulb really did blow (like your brake lights)

My bulb-out light is without a bulb itself. It went haywire when my taillight fell out and shorted something back there, and I had to tap into the wiring on the other side to get the taillight to work again. So that's not a problem. I've worked as a truck-driver and a locomotive engineer, so I'm used to regularly inspecting equipment. I just do a walk-around every so often, and I check the brake-lights whenever I can see the car's reflection in a store window or SUV. &^)

What I'm thinking of doing is crushing a pair of half-out 9004's I have, then soldering the H-4 leads to the bulb leads, which would make a pair of adapters. The thing I've been trying to figure out is how to safely break the 9004's, since I know from experience that halogens can be reactionary. I'm tempted to put them under the front tire and just drive over them.

I'll post if anything wild happens.

The basic problem with the 9004 is the eensy beensy terminals....if you crush a 9004 capsule and solder an H4 socket onto the terminals, you still have the weak link 9004 terminals there.

I say the best way is to use a set of separate high/low relays and drive them with the signal from the wiring harness. OTOH, your idea is a good kluge if you want to drive the relays off the stock 9004 capsule harness.

I can never remember so I just probe the 9004 socket on the car to see which one is hot and which is not with high/low beams....since I assume you wish to hook up your 9004 car wiring to the new H4 bulbs? Then I just use a couple alligator clips and wires to test fire the H4 bulb...use your ohmeter to find the common/ground, then use the battery to fire the bulb and it's generally easy to see which terminal is the bright one. If you want to keep it clean you can clip the 9004 socket and wire the H4 socket directly, or as I prefer, leave the 9004 socket on there and tap into the correct wires to activate separate 40A relays for high and low with the relays controlling direct taps to the battery.
