Does anyone know of any late-model 4 cyl STOCK (1985 and newer) cars/engines that would outperform a stock B230FT?
I don't know too much about other cars/engines (like Honda, Toyota, etc.), so I thought I would solicit the input of the forum to satisfy my curiosity.

Ok, so does anyone want to trade their not-so-quick Volvo for my quite-a bit-quicker '91 Mazda 626DX?
...Please?

1996 Camry. Only about 130 horses, but a lot lighter. Also winds like nobody's business. Close to 95 in third gear, and pretty quickly to this NA245 driver. Some kid in a turbo 240 got nasty with me one night, and I was able to play with him.

The Acura Integra Type R is rated at 195HP (4 cyl), but only 130 lb-ft of torque. I've got more torque with my Volvo 240!

I don't know any exact performance figures on B230FT, but I'd be willing to put my Neon up against it. 150 HP in a 2500 lb car with a chassis set up from the factory for great handling. Stock, the DOHC Neon clocked in at 7.6 sec 0-60, and around 16.0 in the 1/4 mile (Car & Driver), I've got mine in the low 15's in the 1/4 on street tires with a couple of mods.
Great little car. Will beat many cars on the road today (most in handling), gets 35 mpg (high of 40 mpg), very reliable (80k mi so far, no problems). This summer I autocrossed it on a Sunday, went home and switched tires, and left for Montana on Monday. We put 5000 miles on it in 2 weeks, including 2200 miles in 32 hours straight (only stopping for gas).

If only we still had my wife's 940 Turbowagon with a third seat...boy would I like to see you run with that wagon with the child seat on the third seat. Because that's what you will be seeing in front of you even on a quarter mile run with that Neeeeeeooooon.

A B230FT with the Turbo + kit (factory) puts out 188 HP and something like 206 lb.-ft. of torque. Your Neon would get it's ass kicked.

I'm not so sure you're right. The power to weight ratio is just barely in favor of the b230ft w/T+ (.0600 hp/lb compared to .0627 hp/lb). I was figuring the weight of the turbo car to be 3000lbs. (my '87 NON-turbo 240 is supposed to be 2950, so add the turbo, intercooler, etc., and it's probably over 3000lbs., and maybe more depending on how much greater the weight of a 740 is). So basically, they're even in power to weight ratio, so that only leaves the gearing. Much like the presidential race, I say it's too close to call. A regular old B230FT in stock form would probably lose.

You are forgetting the 200+ lb.-ft. of torque the Volvo has. THAT is where you will lose. And yes, a 740 weighs appx. 3000 lbs and should have a 3.73:1 rear end.

I didn't forget about the torque, but since the peak torque is around 3000 RPM, I didn't think it would play a big part in a race where the shifts would hopefully come around 5500+ RPM and stay as high as possible. Also, the rear end ratio depends on the trans, anywhere from 3.31 to 4.10, but probably 3.31 if manual, or 3.54/3.73 if auto. There was no mention of the Turbo Plus in the original post comparing the Neon to the B230FT, so it seems like it would still take a modified B230FT to win (even if it is factory modified). I'm by no means a fan of the Dodge Neon, but I'm not going to say the Volvo would win just because it's a Volvo.

"A regular old B230FT in stock form would probably lose."
It might the first time.
But bring 'em both back after 50k, 100k, 150k, 200k, 250k miles. After 100,000 miles only the B230FT will be running.
And run 'em down the road into a bridge abutment. The B230FT driver will probably walk away, the Neon driver will be a paragraph in the obits.

Testify to what Don says. The other day outran a new Alf Romeo fast-back style with V6 in my 945 with turbo+ factory mounted, and a moderate chip trim (supposedly the 193 hp). I clocked my car 0-60 at 8.7s with no tricks as revving at start (auto tranny) since I want to keep it as long as it lasts. How many say that about their hondamazdastoyotaslexusnissans GTSXVRIs whatevers?

Chip was put in by previous owner. I haven´t opened box to check, but I think he said it was from BSR Sportsman in Växsjö, Sweden.
Their homepage used to be www.bsrab.se, and they should be able to answer you on e-mail. Probably, you need to open your electronics box, note chip label numbers and colors, and provide that to BSR. If your chip is not soldered, it might be an easy thing to replace. I have ordered several things from US companies using my VISA card, so the reverse should work. Good Luck!

I guess it's all what you want in a car, priorities.
Acceleration: Tie (Stock advantage might be Volvo, but why stay stock?)
Handling: Neon (no contest)
Safety: Volvo (no contest)
MPG: Neon (30 city, 35+ hwy)
Longevity: Volvo (Bought the Neon new, 80k now, plan to get 150-175k mi out of it, although our 245 has 214k mi on it, and I'm sure the Neon will be falling apart by that time)
I love the sporty handling and quickness of the Neon, I also love the safety, room, and reliability of our 245. If I had to settle on only one car, I would probably go with a 740 turbo wagon and dump a couple thousand into power and handling improvements.

For a quick little improvement in handling, try the following:
4 wheel KYB Gas shocks
Fresh Front Strut rod bushings
and Bridgestone RE-930 tires all-the-way-around
I have just finished fiting up my newest Wagon a '87 740 Turbo with this combo with great results.
Having been a Solo racer and a mechanic for twenty years before starting my computer IT services company, I like a car that handles fairly well. This combo gives me good handling with a descent ride and is cheap and quick to implement.
I still do all of my own work including mounting and balancing my own tires. Get your tires from the tire-rack in Terre Haute, IN. Check out their WEB page, www.tirerack.com. I went for the highest performance All-Weather tire that comes in the factory stock size.
Enjoy!
PS Anybody know where the interior light relay is on the '90 740??
Please drop me a line.
Thanks

There are probably some others. Some of these are no better performing than the Volvo turbos. Depends on which magazine, which year, and so forth. Much has to do with hp to weight ratio.
