fuel pump whine 200 1982

Hello

Recently I have noticed that I can hear my fuel pump whining when the car is idling. This is new, it hadn't made a sound before. While the car was running I pulled the fuel pump fuse. The sound went away immediatly. Of course the car stalled but I just wanted to indicate that the sound is from

the fuel pump. Another indicator is that the sound seems to be coming from under the drivers seat. Does the sound mean that I will soon have a problem.

P.S. The car still works fine.

William

Hi I had the same thing happen to a 86 240. The in tank pump went out and the external pump started making noise. At first it was hard to tell which pump was making the noise. Replaced the intank pump and the noise got quieter. The external pump was still making some noise. Replaced it with an after-market pump and car wouldn't run right. Returned to the original pump and the car still runs great and I think the pump has quieted down. Hope this helps

I believe that a main pump will sometimes whine when the in tank pump has failed. With the car running you should be able to take a piece of heater hose, place one end in the filler neck, the other to your ear and be able to hear the in tank pump. This can be difficult to distinguish if the main pump is making a whining sound.

Make sure it is the one from under the seat. My under the seat (main) pump totally died, then a month after that my in-tank started whining but I could swear it was the original pump under the drivers seat. Let it idle, get out of the car and put you head under there a bit. Then sneak your head in the trunk or under the rear bumper.

Funny thing though, I noticed a slight whine again. I wonder now if it may be something with the fuel regulator causing this. Maybe too much resistance or something.

    I guess I didn't fully help you out..sorry.
