Hi I had the same thing happen to a 86 240. The in tank pump went out and the external pump started making noise. At first it was hard to tell which pump was making the noise. Replaced the intank pump and the noise got quieter. The external pump was still making some noise. Replaced it with an after-market pump and car wouldn't run right. Returned to the original pump and the car still runs great and I think the pump has quieted down. Hope this helps
