I just got this car. It was given to me cuz the orginal owner bought a new Lexus. It's got only 12,000 miles on it. However, I really hate the car already. It's falling apart everywhere and is in horrible condition. I guess half the problem was the owner for not taking better care of it. The other half would be that This Volvo (and others around this era) were just crap.
The engine runs pretty well though. It's still smooth and so is the tranny. The exterior body is in really great condition. But the interior is falling to peices.
The headliner has many holes (probably from the kids) but it's no excuse for the easily punctured cloth lining. It's leaking from the sunroof somewhere. The plastic dash and door trims are cracked and broken in many pieces. Cloth seating surfaces have discolored (now yellow instead of nice blue). Windshield wiper control arm is broken in half. Gas guage does not function. Radio and speakers sound like crap.
I have started cleaning the interior up. I've taken the seats out and washed them. At least they don't have black/brown spots anymore...they're just faded yellow now. The carpet has been cleaned and looks wonderful now (no fading). It is missing the font passenger floor mat though, but I'll just replace that.
I'm just glad I don't have to keep this car for very long. My plan was to save up and buy a used car in June...but since this one's free, I'll use it for now.

From your replies in this thread, looks like you're coming around to the virtues of being a Volvophile... Hang out here, study the 700 FAQ, get to know your 740, and you'll find it grows on you; the more you work on it, the more amazed you will be by the levels of thought & engineering put into the design. This isn't to say they're perfect - there are some known faults, but by studying the FAQs, you're forewarned and know what to look for.
Welcome to the clan.

Jay,
I've read all the messages in this thread, and will just say that you can't generelaise about any car the way you did. Alos luxury doesn't necessarily mean trouble free (there are more things to go wrong on a luxury car). Not all 740's have all the problems listed on the web site, these may be common problems but it doesn't mean that every car has them, or even most. If you want to generalise then all toyotas have problems with their automatic transmisions so you shouldn't want one of them either. As I am sure you know toyotas are pretty good cars, and so are volvos, having driven both (my aunt had a camry) I can say that it is obvious where the extra money was spent, the volvo feels much more solid, and stable, it rides better..., but that is just my opion and that is why I have a volvo. I hope that you enjoy your's for however long you have it, and that you enjoy whatevcer you replace it with too. Have fun.

$50 vs $2,170 (www.kbb.com). Now why the heck would I call the junk yard when I can get 4340% more $ if I sell the car on my own?

So what's your point? Most people don't give away perfect cars. The one you have sounds as if it's been used by a family with a few kids. It's in horrible condition, yet the engine and tranny are smooth and the exterior is in great condition? What do you plan to buy as a used car? How much do you plan to spend? Here are some repair prices for your petty complaints:
headliner kit=$90
clean sunroof drains=$FREE
dash cover=$45 for fabric or $100 for plastic
seat covers=$190 for the front
I won't bother posting a souce for those parts, since you aren't interested. Does the car really have only 12,000 miles, or was that an error? What part of the country are you located in?

My original plan was to purchase a 1993 Nissan Maxima SE 5sp for about $8k and 150k miles on it. Like I said, that was the original plan but now it's changed. I'm definitely gonna baby this volvo and try to improve it as much as I can. Around June or summer of next year, my bro will give me his 1987 Camry LE auto ($1,700) and I will sell the Volvo ($2,170). The money will either go to my bro or my parents (I'd like to pay off some of my student loans, but it'll depend on who needs the $ more.) The other $8k I had saved up will be down payment for another car 2 summers from now (after I graduate from University.)
Since I won't be keeping the car very long, I've already decided against modding the car for performance. Here's my plan so far:
Clean cloth surfaces and carpet, and dash = very cheap @ home
Clean engine compartment = $3 cleaner and hose
Superglue and colored nail polish to match dash = $3
Sunroof drains = free (have 5gal air compressor @ home)
Carpet mat = $10 @ swap meet or junk yard
Cloth to cover headliner = $5
body paint = $5
generic seat covers = $30 for fronts and back @ swap meet
As you've pointed out, I'm very happy about the drivetrain. The engine is smooth at all speeds. The original owners took the car to the dealer for all scheduled maintainence and have records. Ride is great, brakes work well. Everything but the interior is awesome for it's age...but then again, it's got super low milage. I've talked to the original owner and he swears the milage is correct.
Just got off the phone w/my dad. He said he banged the dash a few times and now the fuel gauge works. Musta just been stuck. Cool!
I *am* interested about where the parts you mentioned can be bought. I might have a change of mind and decide to keep this car...then I'll want it to be in perfect shape. Could you email me where I can find those parts? Thanx dood!

Just curious if you have multiple personalities or something. One post you bash the car, next you praise it.
If I were given a car that ran perfectly but had MINOR COSMETIC ISSUES I dont think that I would be complaining. Interiors are easier to replace than rusted body panels and failed transaxles found on the Camry (as well as your buddies "luxury" Honda). Grow up.
A Camry vs. a Volvo 740? Camry's are nice cars that run a long time, but I dont think they feel as good as a Volvo. Volvos are so solid and planted, a characteristic that is just not found in Asian and American cars.

I had several points earlier in the day while I was thinking about the car. One was...why would someone pay $21k for this car in the first place? I was able to rationalize it by thinking that there were no long term reviews of this car and people bought it for the name (as discussed in another thread about high schoolers wanting older Volvos) and reputation for being an exceptionally safe car. If Volvos are supposed to be luxury cars, then my roommate's 83 Honda Accord must be a super luxury car cuz the only major problem it's had so far is fading body paint.
People do give away perfect cars. We were given an 87 Toyota Camry LE 4cyl auto. It has 120k miles on it. The only thing wrong w/it was the 2 lowest a/c settings don't work, but that's was easily corrected by heading over to a junk yard and paying $5 for the working part. Unfortunately, my bro has that car. The good thing is, he's getting another car around June and I'll get his Camry.
We were given a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 190e 2.3 auto with 150k miles. That car needed it's water pump replaced. That was cheap. Then we turned around and sold the car cuz we didn't need it at the time.
Comparing my bro's Camry to mine, I'd prefer his. It's super reliable and in awesome condition. The original owners used it as a family car, then gave it to their son in high school, then gave it to their daughter for high school. It's been thoroughly used yet still in better condition than the Volvo. The best part is, the sticker price (new) was only $12k.
Ok...I'll step off of this soap box. I'm sorry if I offended anybody. As always, these are my findings of the Volvo (and some generalization) and it's not intended as a flame. After all...I own one now...

Too bad that the previous owner didn't look after your 744 GLE properly. Volvo does make fine cars but just like anything else in life, if you don't look after it, it will show in the end!
Anyway, I have just picked a 764T with only 96k original miles from my mechanic. One of his customers traded it in for a newer unit. He had to replace the turbo as it made a lot of noise and was in its last lag.
The engine is still pretty strong and quiet. It sounds like it could go another 100k miles. Both exterior and interior of the vehicle are in exceptionally good condition. No holes in the headliners, no cracks (yet!)on the dash, no burn holes on the leather seats but they are showing their age (14 yrs old). There is a slight wind noise from the sunroof but nothing that the stereo cannot drown out!
There is a buzzing noise coming from the vacuum booster unit located on the fire wall on the driver side. My mechanic said that if the noise is bothering me, it would be okay to have the unit disconnected or bypassed. I understand that both the climate control system and braking system work off vacuum. Any comments on any potential safety concerns?
I'm considering using synthetic oil and wondering if anyone could offer me comments on the benefits or pros in using the expensive oil and its cost effectiveness! With already almost 100k on the odometer, may be it is too late to switch over to synthetic stuff!
Your inputs on the vacuum and oil issues would be appreciated.

I hope the rest of the readers of this forum aren't reacting the same as you (having harsh feelings towards new fellow owners).
I don't think I was very clear about my feelings on the car. I treat the car as if I had bought it. By doing that, I'm gonna make every effort to keep it in it's current condition and improve on it if I can. It's not like I'm gonna beat the heck outta it cuz after all, it is a means of transportation and sure beats waiting for the bus or riding my bike in the freezing morning to University.
I'd give it back to the owner, but if you read the 2nd sentence of my post, he got a Lexus...therefore doesn't have a need for this car. He knew that I didn't have a car and was on a tight budget w/student loans and other payments, so he let me do whatever I wanted w/the car. He said I could keep it, mod it, or sell it, he didn't care. www.kbb.com rates the trade in value at $2,170. Why the heck would I give the car to you if selling it will pay off some of my loans?
Evan, are there any cars that you would love to own but couldn't justify the cost? There's another web site I found that lists all the same faults I found in my car. Even the 700/900 FAQ lists them too. Are you denying that this car model has problems? After knowing that these problems exists, would you still go back and buy the same car again when there are other cars that have less problems yet cost the same or even less? That's another feeling I have about the car. $21k for this car is unreasonable.

Jay,
All cars have problems. Some cars less than others, some more. Some cars never have anyproblems, some people had good luck with Yugos. I personally had a very good Dodge Aries K. Not to many people gat 220,000 miles out of one of those beasts. I don't think any of the volvo lovers on this site would tell you that volvos are maintanince free. If they do they lie. However, I chose to drive two volvos because they are easy to work on, very safe, parts are easy to fine, and I really like the way they drive. I bought my 88 740 when I was a sophomore in college broke, and in need of transportation, for 300 bucks. It was an incredable pile of trash. It was owned by a Head Injury clinic and had virtually every peice of the interior broken. but, had been amintanied by the volvo dealer and ran perfectly. It needed no engine work and had 199,350 when I bought it. two years later I have completed school and still drive that car. I love it. I have replaced all of the brocken parts after I bought a parts car for 200 bucks, and just completed a 1,000 mile round trip for turkey day this weekend with my wife. the car now has 281,l00 and were going for 500,000
So the oroal of the story is, Don't bitch about volvo's being crappy on the volvo web page or some shmuck like me will feel the need to rant about his volvo for ten or fifteen minuets.

Jay,
You may not like the idea of the volvo, or whatever, but being given the car, hell, i wouldn't complain! Also, personally, if someone gave me the car, be courteous and pass the car on for free (or maybe charge the, for the remaining rego or something), if you sell it, it'd make sense that you would offer the money to the person who gave you the car.....
Volvo 740's have their problems, BUT, no other car in the world has the exact same problems over the globe, but because it does, the brickboard exists. If i had the opportunity, i would buy my car again. The ride is good, plenty of torque, enough power the keep me happy, big, comfy, good on fuel, if you don't floor it everywhere, overall, quite a nice car to drive. Like i said, the 740's all have the exact same problems, most caused by volvo not looking far enough into the future for several small parts.....everything that goes wrong is dead simple and cheap to fix (usually!), and ever since i got my 740 i've been damned happy with it. Believe it or not, i've also fallen in love with the shape too. As hard as it may be to understand (most 740 owners will agree) the 740's are a damn good car, to own and drive.
