200-series vs. 700-series ALL 1984-1990

Hello,

I recently own an 1984 Volvo 244 GLE. I was thinking of changing to Volvo 700-series (1984-1990). Does anyone could tell me if that is a good or a bad idea, please?

thanks,

Matthew

The 740 has way more gadgets to fix when they break. Usually they are easy to fix, but if you are not a fixit sort and want them fixed, this will be expensive. Basic car is very solid, like the 240.

There is a local Volvo mechanic here in town.

When the 700 series cars first came out, he told me that 700s were going to make him rich.

He is now a rich man.

Overall, they are solid cars (stay away from the v-6), but they seem to be plagued with lots of electrical problems....seats, windows, turn signals....the list goes on...and on....and on....

If you want solid Volvo reliability, you'd be best to stick with the basic 240.

even 240s are too new for me...

My personal thoughts, others may not agree.

The 200 advantages- Higher ceiling for 6'plus people. Lower maintennance and repair costs. Slightly better crash protection. Higher MPG in non-turbo versions

The 700 advantages- Turbo plus option provides way more power. Control layout is better. Less boxy in 90-91

    Re: 200-series vs. 700-series>My .02 ALL 1984-1990

I own a '90 780 turbo coupe with 162k+. A New England car with no rust whatsoever! I've owned her a little over a year. Just the routine stuff you would expect from a car with that kinda milage.

I've had GM, Dodge, Lexus, . This car replaced the '96 Lexus ES300 that was stolen(whatta ya expect in NYC). This is my first volvo, and I love it.

After a 2 hour trip last week in my wifes '96 infiniti I30, I've come to these conclusions.

    1. My 780 has the most comfortable seats of any car that I have ever owned.(leather not a crack !, heated, better lumbar support than the rice burners)

    2. We both feel alot safer in the Volvo. (This may be psychological.)

    3. The Volvo does feel a little under powered on take off. (remember I'm in NYC>> THE TRAFFIC!) Alotta fun once turbo kicks in though.

    4. NO MAJOR MECHANICAL< ELECTRICAL
    5. Cheaper insurance premiums than the entry level luxury sedan.

    6. The Valet may not park her in the front, but at least I know that

she will be there when I'm ready to leave. (Volvo's don't have reputation of being stolen around here).

    7. I would feel 100% confident in purchasing another Volvo product.

    8. If you are willing to deal with a few annoying intermittent problems,

mine have all gone away (little or no $$), you will enjoy many miles from your 700 series. (mine is not for sale)

    GOOD LUCK ! !
