factory radio, left side off and on. Do I replace? 900 93

I have a 940 turbo 93. The radio is cutting in and out, depending on the bumps. The left side speakers cuts out both front and back. The right side speakers there is no problem with that side. All I have to do is touch the volumm control knob and it comes back on. If I turn it up louder, I have no problem. I was considering taking the radio out and spraying some electronic cleaner on the volumn control knob inside. Not sure if it is dirt or what. Maybe I need to replace the complete radio. Has anyone got any suggestions for a replacement or is it just dirt inside that I can clean up with some spray cleaner. I have just had the car a few months and it came out of the Chicago area.

thanks

Roy

See if you can borrow a can of that tuner cleaner from someone. You'll be shocked at how much they charge for that stuff these days! I payed about $8 for a small can at Radio Shack.

I think you have good information in the other posts.

If the cleaner dosen't do the trick Volvo has an exchange program that isn't too bad. I replaced the radio in my '85 a couple years ago when the tuner and display died so I couldn't tune it any more. My dealer got me an exchange unit for about $100 as I remember. The "refurbished" radio looked and worked like new. Cheaper than any other solution for a truly broken one.

I will keep this exchange in mind. I think my first step is try the electronic cleaner. Several people seem to think it will work.

      Thanks

My 93 945 turbo has had the same prob. Using a CO contact cleaner pressure pack( precision electronic cleaning solvent) was the answer. While I had the radio out I removed the bottom metal cover and gave the tape heads a clean with a cotton bud moist with isopropyl alcohol.

Thanks for the information. I will try give it a shot. By CO did you mean carbon dioxide. I was planning on just some standard electronic cleaner.

      Thanks

        Roy,

The product I used is called 'CO CONTACT CLEANER' made by CRC an Australian company. I purchased from an auto outlet. It has carbon dioxide as the propellant, is plastic safe, leaves no residue and contains no lubricants. Its application is for precision electronic cleaning. Used it some 6 months ago and have had no trouble since.

Cost for a 475ml can about $16 AUS.

        Take care,

        John H from DOWNUNDER

Re: factory radio, left side off and on. Do I replace? 900 93

/// The provious post is correct. The problem is the control. Wheather or not spraying will fix it is an unknown until you try it. Be sure the cleaner is for that use. There are cleaners that will melt parts. You should have no problem. Carefully direct the spray into the control.

There is sometimes trouble getting parts for older radios and generic controls that are snapped together to replace an old control are not always the same size (given the small space). Depending on milage and radio use another radio will have the same wear.

I fixed the factory radio for an '89 240 by shooting cleaner in the volume control. It was a multi-function pot with balance, and fade, etc. but the control's housing had openings to where you could actually see the wipers and get the cleaner where it needed to be.

It also was the left speaker...

      Art

Thanks for the information. I will look up on the board on how to remove the radio so that I can get to those holes you are talking about.

      Thanks for the help

      Roy
