Leak free window vents 140-160

Is it possible to keep these things from leaking? First, the bloody

lock latch falls off, and then the thing leaks lots of water when it

rains or whatever. Also, even if the lever is intact water stillc comes

in if there is enough of it.

Should I buy new windows from volvo? Should I take several of them

to a glass shop and have them punch a hole in the glass and put a screw

through the glass to hold the lever in place? I see this on some vent

windows on cars in salvage yards and it seems pretty solid.

I want vent windows, though at the moment I've glued shut on my daily

driver to keep the water out.

    chris

Ive fixed several with J.B.WELD the trick is to scratch up the glass and metal parts with coarse sand paper and to clean parts with alcohol.

be sure that youve got them in the correct position and index the inside latch.somehow so that it clicks at the right spot.

did my 145 front and rear vents 14 yrs.ago and still intact.

suggest you mark the spots and then remove vent from auto.

For the latches I ended up chipping the stock latches off as they still whistled and replaced with IPD part#cq9b6001.

they are a little trickier but they really pull the vent SHUT.

    hope this helps RUSS

Re: Leak free window vents 140-160

Don't, I say again, DO NOT try to drill a hole in the glass.

The tempered glass has a sufficient residual surface compression

to insure that it is nearly impossible to start a crack in it.

Consequently it is balanced by an equal or greater tension in

the core of the glass. When you drill with a diamond core drill,

it'll go pretty good until you get through the compressed layer

and when you reach the core, a sudden series of fractures will

relieve the tensile stress there, resulting in the entire indow

being reduced to pieces about 1/4" long and roughly equiaxed.

(I was going to try to do this while I was in Panama and even

bought the diamond core drill. Caution told me that it would

be prudent to try it on a window I didn't need first. Sure glad

I did! Pieces of the glass turned up for over 2 years following

the incident, even though I cleaned exhaustively for several days

straight. During a tour of the Ford auto glass factory in Tulsa

I asked some of the folks there about this and they flatly told

me, "Once it has been tempered, you can NOT drill it, cut it, or

even chip it without a complete destruction of the window.")

I have had pretty good luck with the double sided foam adhesive

pads used to stick stuff to walls, mirrors, etc. It has held my

vent windows to the hinge pins for 3 years now, which is about

2 1/2 years better than with epoxy, Krazy gloo, etc.

I bought a pair of "Hook-on" window latches from NAPA for under $12 for the pair about 4 years ago and they work great!

I don't have the part number handy, but they will be in the Balkamp catalog and they have to be ordered in most cases (when I worked at NAPA I kept them in stock!)

I've tried those things and I don't like them. They prevent the

gasket from sealing correctly so there is a whistle from air coming

in where they clamp around the window (and water if you was your car)

plus they are harder to deal with if you open the window very often

(at least the ones I got which will fall off if you open the vent).

Is it so hard to glue metal to glass?

Re: Leak free window vents 140-160

There's an aftermarket latch you can use that slides on the edge of the glass so no drilling is required. I got a couple of them years ago at Voluparts in Atlanta, but I think I recently saw them in IPD's mailer. They work pretty good.

Are the pivot fittings at the top still attached good? If not, you should be able to reattach them with that rear view mirror glue. That glue never seems to work very long when used to attach to latches however.
