Rearend clunk/rattle - driveshaft? 200 93

I'm being driven insane by a rattle (not quite a clunk)somewhere from the middle to the back of the car. I was convinced some piece of exhaust was hitting the underside but I have eliminated this possibility. Sound occures usually at low speeds going over even the tinniest of bumps. At higher speeds (40+ mph) I don't hear it.

I noticed yesterday when I grab the driveshaft at the center support bearing and push up and down or right to left, the support bearing moves around inside its bracket oh about 1/16 inch and seems like that could definitely be causing my noise. The bearing to driveshaft interface is tight with no clearance that I can detect. Sound could be coming from that vicinity which is about where rear passenbers feet would be.

Any opinions or experiences appreciated. I don't see how whatever holds the center support bearing on the outside could be a wear item.

Thanks in advance,

Robb

    Howdy,

I thought I had rear end problems in my 78. Instead I found that it needed the center support bearing. This is common.

I put my car up on jack stands, blocked the wheels, stared it up, put it in gear, and then crawled under(be very careful) with my stethoscope(2ft long hose). I scanned, with my scope from back to front. When I got to the support bearing, there was no longer any doubt about where the noise was coming from.

I bought the bearing, doughnut, and u-joints. I then marched the whole mess over to my local machine shop.

ps. If you go under the car with it running and in gear MAKE SURE THAT IT IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED, AND BLOCK THE WHEELS! BE VERY CAREFUL!

      Lawrence,

Thanks for the tip but I can say for sure that it wouldn't make the noise under those conditions - no bumps. Bumps are the trigger. My wife and all my neighbor would however be making alot of noise - "Get out from underneath that car , you idiott!"

I did have a diagnostic idea - maybe someone can give me some feedback. If I jam some wedges of wood between the bearing support thing (donut?) and the frame and take it for a drive I will know in 10 seconds if that is it. Anybody have any feedback on this?

      Thanks,

      Robb

        Lawrence,

I experienced the same thing you are experiencing now--clunking going over bumps. Have you checked your transmission mount? That was the culprit for me. Replaced the worn transmission mount (new one was about $60.00) and no more noise.

        Hope this helps!

          GA - Thanks,

I'll look at the tranny mounts next but right now what I'm trying to determine is if that drive shaft center bearing should have that much play in it when you grab the driveshaft and move it around right at the center bearing. I'm starting to have a good feeling that that's where my clunk is coming from.
