a Volvo tool for the spare wheel?

Ok, maybe you fellows can help me with a problem I've had since

first seeing a 245...

there is a strap for the spare tire.. but what about the jack?

this really bothers me; it seems as though there just isn't any

way at all to secure it with what Volvo has provided.

with my last 245 I assumed that some parts had been lost.

now I have a wagon with the original spare! I don't even think

the compartment had even been opened! when I checked for the

spare's exsistace the first day, the seller looked at me in awe..

as if she had no idea there was a tire in the thing.

volvo must be holding out on us. how should I secure the jack?

it's just sitting in there, helpless, insecure... poor jack.

in fact, poor john.. who can't give jack a home.

please, for the love of god, help john help jack! (cries)

One more crack about a jack...

My 85 245ti original jack

wasn't worth a hack

so I threw it in a sack

and bought a new $20 scissor jack

so now when a I get a tire that goes slack

(and I'm not at home with my floor jack)

I reach in the middle covered storage area in back

and there is that nice new boxed jack

that I have practiced with to get the knack

so the car won't fall with a whack

and crack

my head on the back

and everything won't go black!

sweet Mary, mother of jack!

well, that's an interesting solution; one that I just might end

up using...

there's just one thing about it that bothers me:

what about that lovely little niche on the "locking compartment" side

of the well? mine has a little piece of textured vinyl in the bottom,

as if to welcome the bottom of the jack with open arms.

this is the same vinyl that covers two sides of the spare wheel well,

must there not be some type of strap here for the jack?

what do you think about expanding the jack while in the niche?

speaking of expansion, my mind must be expanding... from all this

talk of jack and Jill... wait, who's Jill? get her out! her

ears must not hear the "lore of jack"!

Re: sweet Mary, mother of jack!

I had the benefit of seeing how mine came from the factory. The jack lies on its side, as has been said. The handle stores U-bend down inside the jack. There is an ajustable strap that secures the tool pouch (contains white cotton gloves) to the screw of the jack.

Works slick and does the trick.

Kind sir!

Thank you so very much.

that was the exact information I had been looking for!

I really think that Volvo should have depicted this arrangement

on the label inside the spare wheel well..

In fact, I think I'm going to draw up and illustration and affix

it to that very panel where it belongs.

thanks again, you're a real volvo expert.

Re: sweet Mary, mother of jack!

Hey, that's cool. I inherited my 84 from my parents, and never saw those gloves, but I recently bought an 83 (and most people would buy a NEWER car than what they're driving now), and in the tool pouch was a pair of gloves that looked and felt more like old graham crackers. I threw them away double quick, but to think they were genuine Volvo gloves... How thoughtful of those Swedes.

Re: a Volvo tool for the spare wheel?

John,

I store my 245 DL's jack in the spare compartment. I lower it so it will fit side ways between the spare tire and the inside(cargo side)wall of the tire well. This with the hook facing the tire and the jack base facing the well wall. Then I carefully extend the jack by turning the screw with my fingers, until it's wedged between the tire and the side of the storage well. Locks everthing in nicely ... no rattling jack. I store the jack extension handle in the shallow center storage bin. Don't over extend the jack, as even turning it by hand can distort metal. Just tight enough so it's snug and locked in place. There may be better ways of storing the jack but this has worked well for me over the 14 years I've owned the 86 wagon.
