distributor shaft alignment 200 88

Yikes!!! I took apart my distributor to install a new impulse sender in my '88 240. I expected to find an indexing pin on the shutter wheel

but instead it was splined 360 degrees and now I'm not sure of the

relative position of this part to the rotor. This "shutter wheel" is the piece that rotates around and passes through the impulse sender.

Did you get it back together? I did remove my distributor and noted the shutter alignment if you need it.

Re: distributor shaft alignment 200 88

Hi David,

Yes I would like to receive that info on positioning the shutter

wheel on the distro shaft. It's my son's car and he is getting a little

frustrated with his cheapo mechanic!! Thanks, Walt

Re: distributor shaft alignment 200 88

Ok here is what i observed on mine: With the offset pinned dog aligned precisely pointing at the two roundish square indentations carefully turn over the distributor and then looking down at the shutter, the edge of an opening on the shutter should be aligned exactly with the center point of the hall sensor. Of course there are two edges to the opening, it will be the edge towards the clockwise direction. Expressed another way, look at the shutter with the distributer held plug to the top and the hall to the bottom it will be the left edge of the opening. Put a pencil mark on the shutter top in line with opening edge to judge where it is as the edge goes out of site when it goes into the hall sensor slot.

Hope you can understand my description and that this works for you.

BTW my distributor has the number 030 on it. Hope yours is the same.

What was the original problem? No start, no spark, no fuel?

Good luck!

Re: distributor shaft alignment 200 88

My concern is not with the rotor being positioned at #1 cylinder top dead center, but rather with the ring under the rotor that has cutouts that pass by the "Hall sender" that sends a signal to the Ignition control module.

This has been referred to in the past by Abe as the shutter wheel. It had to be pressed off the distributor shaft in order to replace the impulse sender

or "Hall sender" Now there is no index to put it back on relative to the

rotor. The Bentley manual shows a type that has snap rings and an index pin, but mine has splines with no reference pins or mark! Help!!

Re: distributor shaft alignment 200 88

It would have been better to drive out the pin on apposite end of the shaft, then slide out shaft with shutter still attached keeping all parts in correct order and alignment. Suggest you visit a friendly Volvo shop and ask to see a distributor, they typically have one, some shops even rebuild them. Observe the alignment of shutter to the offset link piece that the pin goes through and transfer to yours. If your nice a dealer parts person might even lay a distributor on the counter for you to observe.

Any slight error in the alignment will be corrected when you set timing with a light. This small error amount would then be transferred to the rotor but that would not matter at all as long as it is slight.

I plan to remove my distributor this weekend to replace the O rings (I have an oil leak). Could look at mine and post info on the alignment for you. Or other posters with a spare distributor might oblige.

Good Luck

Re: distributor shaft alignment 200 88

/// Some one else may know a short cut but positioning the crank at top dead center in the compression stroke, observe the valve cam position, then positioning the spline to point the rotor to the number one spark plug wire will realign the ignition.
