tailgate wires - function 200 1983

I'm almost ready to rewire my tailgate and replace hinges. Can anyone tell me the specific function of all the wires that pass through the hinges? Haynes is not much good for this kind of thing and the archives have good instructions on replacing the wires but I can't find a good schematic with wire colour and function. On the driver's side I have 2 wires - yellow through the hinge is connected to a black wire that goes to the defogger, grey goes to the left license plate light and is y'd off to a connector that is disconnected in my hatch (the previous owner did some creative wiring back here I think). The passenger side is OK I think - 4 wires - one for the wiper, one for the door locks, one for the license plate light, and one ground? The replacement passenger side hinge I got has a ground wire from one side of the hinge to the other - I know my current hinge does not have this. Right now everything works back there except the defogger. Thanks.

When you replace the tailgate wires, I would recommend NOT routing them through the hinges as in the factory setup, for they will flex sharply and break again in time (poor design, though it looks tidy). Better to just route the wires out the hinge bolt access holes in the tailgate up and under the headliner frame. This frame can be gently bent to facilitate the installation.

/// Check the defroster traces for continuity. A small scratch will kill the defroster. There are repair kits for this resistnace material if it is on the surface. If it is inside the glass sandwitch and not continuous you will have to put it on the surface or replace the rear glass.
