Another Synth oil question..last one ! 700 87

I know you are Amsoil nuts....but I am impulsive and, at this point...cheap....So, I have picked up some Mobil 1 for a complete change in my 3 Volvos....Here are the questions:

1. They offered 5-30, 10-30 and 15-30....New York/ Long Island area...I bought 10-30... (for one 760 turbo, 740 and 5 cyl.850)....Did I make the right choice in weights...there is no guide to this...

2. If, in the future I want to change to Amsoil...can I ??

3. To make the change...full oil/ filter change, then filter change at 3,000 and then oil/ filter at 7,000....Does this sound right? Then every 7,000 after?

Again, its the weights that concern me...Mobil calls their oil Tri-synthetic and then full synthetic...I hope I bought the right product. Thanks Alan

Yes, 10W-30 is fine

Certainly, just drain the old and put in the new

Good plan.

Re: Another Synth oil question..last one ! 700 87

Alan,

I running 10w30 Mobile 1 synthetic year round in all of my Bricks. Very good results especially in Northern Utah and Montana winter weather. I also make frequent trips into Arizona and Nevada in summer months using the same weight Mobile 1. Never had a problem or a concern. My 95 944T came with a Volvo recomendation to use 10w30 weight oil year round unless in very extreme situations. Towing in high heat, mountain roads or 40 below zero weather for prolonged periods may require lighter or heavier weights ... but I would say for your purposes 10w30 is the right stuff. Mobile 1 and a good Mann or Bosch Premium filter changed frequently should keep you on the road for a good many trouble free miles ... through all kinds of weather.

I say Yes, the 10-30 is fine for us Long Islanders. From everything I have read you can interchange synthetic to non synthetic and back without any mixing problems. I don't know about the 7000 miles though. My opinioun: oil, synthetic or not will still get dirty, The filter change at 3000 WILL help but you are still getting particles past that filter. I might go 4000 with the synthetic but not 7000.

My dad goes that synthetic route but I don't. I have 230000 on a Chevy pickup with no engine work done on it and I have a Jeep with 200000 with only a head job. My '89 240 has 186000 on it and it's chugging along just fine. I've checked the valve shims for wear and it wasn't even enough to consider doing. So I'm not convinced you gain that much from synthetic oils. I think on my cars the engines will outlast the bodies.

Re: Another Synth oil question..last one ! 700 87

hi tony I'm with you on this one. The manufactures tend to agree too, you should still stick to the recommended service intervals, but if you want to extend them that's your choice. My brother's 83 240 had almost 300,000 miles on it before the body gave out, engine was still going strong, as a matter of fact the only engine in a 240 or newer I have had to change is one where the previous owner had used symthetic and extended the service interval (just changed the filter) a crankshaft bearing went. his 260 had similar problms. This was about 10 years ago though and I think he went even further than 7000 miles without changing the oil so I am certainly no condemming synthetic oils (no angry responses please:)). I am sure it doesn't hurt the engine and is very good oil. I also wouldn't use the clarity of the oil as an indicator of whether it is time to change the oil. The oil on my 740 is still clear when I change it, but I know the detergents and other additives are used up and it is time to change it, the additives in sysnthetic may or may not last longer (have to be a chemical engineer to know for sure I guess) so just use whatever oil you feel is right (synthetic or regular) as long as you change it at the recommened time (car manufacturers or if you prefer oil manufacturers whichever you trust more). I don't know maybe the car manufactures are allowing users of synthetic to have longer oil change intervals now (after all my car is 11 years old, their opions may have changed) but I am sure the last I heard that to have the warrenty honoured you had to change the oil at the (same) recommended time synthetic or not.

anyway enough of this (it is beginning to sound like a lecture:)). Sorry if anything is incorrect now.
