Re: Another Synth oil question..last one ! 700 87

hi tony I'm with you on this one. The manufactures tend to agree too, you should still stick to the recommended service intervals, but if you want to extend them that's your choice. My brother's 83 240 had almost 300,000 miles on it before the body gave out, engine was still going strong, as a matter of fact the only engine in a 240 or newer I have had to change is one where the previous owner had used symthetic and extended the service interval (just changed the filter) a crankshaft bearing went. his 260 had similar problms. This was about 10 years ago though and I think he went even further than 7000 miles without changing the oil so I am certainly no condemming synthetic oils (no angry responses please:)). I am sure it doesn't hurt the engine and is very good oil. I also wouldn't use the clarity of the oil as an indicator of whether it is time to change the oil. The oil on my 740 is still clear when I change it, but I know the detergents and other additives are used up and it is time to change it, the additives in sysnthetic may or may not last longer (have to be a chemical engineer to know for sure I guess) so just use whatever oil you feel is right (synthetic or regular) as long as you change it at the recommened time (car manufacturers or if you prefer oil manufacturers whichever you trust more). I don't know maybe the car manufactures are allowing users of synthetic to have longer oil change intervals now (after all my car is 11 years old, their opions may have changed) but I am sure the last I heard that to have the warrenty honoured you had to change the oil at the (same) recommended time synthetic or not.

anyway enough of this (it is beginning to sound like a lecture:)). Sorry if anything is incorrect now.
